TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

In 2008, there was a total of 1,108 monuments lit up in blue around the world as part of the WDD monument challenge. The USA accounted for 42 of them (less than 4%). Considering the US accounts for nearly 10% of the people with diabetes in the world, I thought it do a lot better than that, don't you think?

You may argue: "Well, lighting up a whole building is no easy task!" This is true to a certain extent: check out this page, with details on how to get a local monument lit up in your area. But that was not the only thing where the US fell short. Last year, there was practically NO mention about World Diabetes Day in Google Alerts > Health on November 14. None!

Could the USA do better in 2009? I certainly think so! What do you plan on doing?

To give you some ideas, I invite you to visit WDDUSA.org, a separate site we've created with the goal of raising the profile of World Diabetes Day in the US this year.

See the things you can do for World Diabetes Day: it's mostly about RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT the disease and the day... not too hard. On the home page of WDDUSA you can find some ideas. Check them out and once you have, make sure to pledge to do at least three things (they don't need to be big) for World Diabetes Day:

I agree with you, Manny! World Diabetes Day needs more visibility in the US. I'm a member of the committee who's working on activities for World Diabetes Day in Sacramento. We'll be lighting the CA State Capitol Building blue. VSP Vision Care's building will also be lit blue the entire week leading up to World Diabetes Day. This is our first year doing this, and we weren't even sure if it was possible when we started. I encourage everyone to think about what you can do to raise awareness about diabetes on November 14 in your community.
