Type 1 Diabetes and Dating Research
Hello Fellow Type 1's!
My name is Sandra Sawa and I am an undergraduate student in Psychology at York University in Canada. I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for 8 years. Diabetes to me was like having a full-time job on top of school, on top of my part-time job, and on top of having friends and dating. So diabetes has given me the chance to live life differently from those who don't have it. I am certain that even within diabetes, many diabetics experience things differently.
Over the years, I have developed an interest in what its like to have diabetes and date at the same time. I have reviewed the literature on this and surprisingly, the literature is not much! So I have developed a thesis project which examines these social aspects of diabetes. More has to be learned about the dating experiences of diabetics.
I need your help!!! If you are between the ages of 18-27 and are currently dating and involved in a heterosexual romantic relationship, please take the time to fill out my survey. You'll be asked questions about your relationship with your partner, some questions about your self and some about your diabetes. This study will not be possible without your help!
Upon completion of this 15 minute online survey, you can enter for a chance to win 2 movie tickets for you and your partner.
I appreciate all the help I can get. I would really like to contribute to greater knowledge in the field of diabetes and social experiences.

Thank you Tee! I think most people in their undergrads refuse to use clinical populations for their thesis but I was stubborn enough and decided to try my very best to get a hold of some diabetics! Because I'm an undergrad, I don't have access to hospital patients. Hope psychs going great for you!

It's a really interesting topic... I can tell you, My ex boyfriendsmother made a huge deal out of it... she was a psychiatric nurse so she thought she was a diabetes specialist. (uhmm... I personally never saw the connections... but anyways...) one time me and my ex got into a fight and she verbally attacked me claiming that she had taken care of my diabetes all of these years (she had to call 911 once..) basically making me out to be a nuisence because of it. it took a HUGE strain on our relationship. The relationship I'm in now is NOTHING like that (because my boyfriends moms not a psycho path...) but it's interesting to see the kind of impact it have on other peoples relationships. Let us know how your research turns out! =)

Thanks for sharing that! I will definitely let you guys know the results! Everybody has different experiences with diabetes...but I find that in some way, it does impact relationships. I mean, it has in my case as well!

lol tara!! glad you're in a normal relationship now...my ex boyfriend's mom used to tell me that if i gave her son my disease, she would "make sure i'd regret it" so that was when i learned that some people think diabetes is contagious, and in this case, she thought it was an STD. pretty ignorant, but its funny looking back. the guy im dating now is really sweet about the whole thing, but at first he was kinda overprotective and always asking me if my sugars were ok, which got really annoying after a while so i told him he can ask me twice a day how im feeling and thats his limit, and that he should ask me how I'M doing, and not how my SUGARS are :D

You know what Tee...my boyfriend still always asks me if my blood sugar is ok. And my mom on the other hand, EVERY MORNING, so comes in my room to check my blood sugar because I have a history of severe lows. I guess the just really care. And I appreciate it even thou it can be sooo annoying at times.
Also my ex boyfriends mom told her son that I'm no good because i was diseased...good thing we're no longer together. But these things unfortunately exist and they are a result of ignorance. -
