Not sure what I've been doing right. Physical labor? Meditation?

I was diagnosed type 1 in 1961. Now that I'm 61, I decided to try on-line communities. I live in a rural area and only know one type 2. The support group I tried a few years ago spent too much time…Continue

Protein for wound healing

I have a wound that will not heal. It started with rib surgery in May 2012. All my docs and nurses, including a body healer who is veggie, told me to eat beef. My protein count is low. I need higher than normal protein to help with healing. So I've eaten as much beef as I have in my whole life and I'm 63! Apparently, it's the quality of the protein as much as the the amount. I am distrustful of this opinion, but haven't found much on the web and can't afford a holistic doctor. I'm eating lots…See More

Nursing Homes

I tried to add discussion earlier. It disappeared. Forgive me if this a repeat.I was in a nursing home in MA for a few months recovering from accident injuries. The nurses and doctors there knew very little about treating diabetes. They would take a test before a meal, give me CI -covering insulin, but no MI -meal insulin. So of course, my bg would go up. Then the cycle would start again. The nurses didn't seem to know what I was talking about. I spoke with the head nurse who said they did not…See More

Poverty and diabetes

Posted on August 26, 2010 at 4:46pm 12 Comments

In Holyoke MA the rate of diabetes is climbing toward 10%. The income level of the city is about half of the median income for the rest of the state. The obesity rate is 26% and for low-income pre-school children, it is over 12%.

I teach GED classes for parents who are trying to get better jobs for themselves and their families. Some have 2 or 3 jobs and still come to class. For some, their main exercise is walking to work in all kinds of weather. They eat at LOT of McDonald's and… Continue

Cancer

Posted on August 25, 2010 at 10:32am 4 Comments

Cancer is your cells attacking each other. That seems to be the current take on diabetes. Sort of like "friendly fire." I went through a couple of years of lymphoma treatments - surgery, chemo. I'm fine and dandy right now. My friends got the book What to Eat When You've got Cancer. They made recipes for me to put in freezer. Made life much easier. The book could have been written by ADA.

I had great care from a oncologist who knew about diabetes and keeping it level. Mostly simply… Continue
