Amanda, I hope your doctor gets diabetes. He deserves it. One really good way to drive up your BG is cereal, even cereal without sugar if you could find it. Grains are tough on BG.Don't be afraid of eggs. Mel

I think that anyone would have problems with this diet. I would say that you need a doctor that to update his information on diabetes. Cereal no matter what kind it is makes my blood sugar sky rocket. What happened to the protein for breakfast? Al...

Administrative Assistant at The Historic RailPark & Train Museum

A little extra about me

Well, since the last time I was on this site, a lot has changed. I am now a divorced mom of tow boys, Austin is 7 (3-3-2000) Chris is 5 (3-27-2002) I was diagnosed as a diabetic on March 12, 2007. My boyfriend and I recently purchased our first home together. I have also stated back to school. I plan to graduate in May of 2012 with an Associates in Business Management. I am the Administrative Assistant at The Historic RailPark and Train Museum. It is a tourist attraction that was once a Train Depot along the L&N line. Basically, I play with trains and book weddings. It is fun! I am still having a very hard time getting my sugar under control. But I take full responsibility. I have such a busy schedule that I forget at time to take my medicine.

Has anyone every started a Diabetic Support Group?

I check around to the support groups in my local area. ALL are during the time that I work. Its like they do not offer a support group during the time that people can be there, like a Saturday or Sunday. And, everyone at the group is much older. I did not even know about the group until I did some calling. So, how do you start a support group. Maybe this one can be for all ages, yet appeal to a younger group? Any feedback?

Does this every get easy?

Okay, so I am not trying to feel sorry for myself, but yesterday was not good and today seems to be heading down hill. I know that when my doctor changes my medicine it affect me. But really, should I really feel depressed, have a horrible headache, feel like this is putting me over the edge! I feel like I need to cry, scream, yell, basically throw a 2 year old fit. I work around non-diabetics. They do not understand the struggles that I face everyday. The come in with wonderful smelling fries a… Continue

Back Again

So, I have not been to this site in over a year. A lot has changed for me. I am now divorced. I now go to school full time plus work full time. I am very busy and the thing that I have been letting slide is not taking care of myself. So, I met a wonderful guy who I now live with (we just purchased our first house) and he is helping me change. I am just still having a hard time. I changed to a different doctor. He has kept me on the same medicine, but had put me on a very strict diet. I take 40 u… Continue

New Insulin

I am now taking Lantus and Novolog. Lantus is supposed to be a slow release insulin that I take once a day at bedtime. I take 10 units. Novolog is a fast acting insulin. I take it 3 times a day 10 minutes before each meal. I take 7 units of this. I was told that I had to be real careful with the Novolog because it acts so quickly that my sugar will drop fast. The pharmacist said that it peaks 1-3 hours after the dose and will last for 3-5 hours. So, how far do I spread my meals out? Do I still n… Continue

I am now on insulin . . . now what?

The doctor put me on insulin today. After taking it I have a slight headache. Could be from the stress today or just from the insulin, right? He also kept me on Metformin. I now take 15cc of insulin twice a day and 1000mg of metformin twice a day. I also take a depression pill before bed. I am upset about having to take the insulin. I have always been told that once I did take insulin that I always would. I so bad wanted to do this on my own, but I just couldn't. Sometime I still think I am in d… Continue

hey, Amanda. I agree with you that Diabetes stinks but it is part of your life now and you need to take care of yourself so that you can take care of your boys! This is what I tell myself everyday when I get frustrated injecting myself: "I have family that loves me very much and if I give up, I will be giving up on them". Plus, I have figured out that all my actions can affect my life so I need to try my best to really take care of my T1.

Hi Amanda,

Working at night does complicate things. Changes in eating and sleeping patterns will upset your internal clock. At least initially this will likely cause problems with your blood sugars. I advise that you continue to take your meds the same way as you do now, at mealtime, and see what happens. Take your Byetta 1 hour before eating and metformin with food to avoid stomach distress. If your Lexipro causes drowziness, take it before you sleep. In a few weeks most people make the adjustment and you should see your blood sugars stabilize. If they don't, call to your endocrinologist or regular physician. Let me know how it goes.

You're welcome Amanda. I'm glad you took action. :-)
You sound like you have everything planned out, that's great!
I also joined a diabetic support group, headed by one of the diabetes dietitians, but I had to stop going due to my mum having and operation and having to stay with her constantly for 4 months but I'm planning to return to it beginning of February. It's held once a week here and the few times I had attended I felt pretty good, It makes you realize you're not going through all this alone and everyone is supportive and full of advice.
I'm also going to restart the water exercises that I had to stop for the same reason. At the moment I can't do any other exercises or walk and I found the water exercises easy to do and it made me feel really good and pleased with myself at the end of each session.
Take care Amanda,
Loren
