Only your neck and right shoulder? :-)
November 20
I just fettled my neck and right shoulder. It takes 30 minutes of stretching every morning to get tuned up (or fettled, I should say). The day goes much better, riding or not, if I prepare for the day in this way. "Fettled"...I like that. Have I ...

Just me

I grew up in Vermont, Victoria, Australia. I was an active kid and into swimming training. I was a member of Nunawading swimming club and later went back as a teacher. I met my wife through swimming (and she still does swim in Masters). In 1995 I emigrated to the United Kingdom. Son1 was born in 1996 and Son2 in 2000.

I was diagnosed as T2 diet only in 1995 at the tender age of 27 when registering with the National Health Service. I inherited this affliction from my mum. I managed really well for 13 years with a high diet of exercise.

I started to cycle to work in 2004 as running two cars is expensive and work was only 7 miles away at that time. I then got back into the exercise regime in a major way. I started spending a lot more on cycling kit and better components and really got hooked again. Endorphines from sport are ACE !!

My cycling helped with my diabetes in many ways but put my body under stress also. I joined Audax UK and started riding with other like minded people for longer and longer distances and for longer and longer periods without sleep.

I had my first real hiccup in 2007 with my first septicaemia leg infections and back then the doctor tried to get me onto tablets but I promised to be good as I saw it as a sign of failure. I had moved work locations and was now commuting 23 miles each way so my body was under more stress. I was riding 1000 mile months throughout the year.

In March 2009 I had my next hiccup with further septicaemia and a throat infection. A spot check by my GP found my sugars to be 12 when they should have been 6 so he prescribed Metformin SR 500mg x 1. Getting accustomed to the medication has caused me to drop some mileage and the way my body and head react has changed. I am still trying to build back up and trial and error is high on the agenda.

It is this last aspect that has brought me to this haven. I have not managed to find a great deal of information on the www re: cycling and diabetes or much about athletes either. I have a lot to share but equally still want to learn more.

This site looks and feels cool so I'm in.

Angry man caused by low blood sugar

I had a bit of a tricky day today.
Rode to work as per normal routine, and ate my usual food etc.
Instead of my normal day job I was on a special training day. This involves dressing in a special suit and a respirator.
I drove a van full of my colleagues 30 miles in driving rain to the training venue. We were running a little late as we took a couple of wrong turns. I was driving, not navigating :-)
We then had to change into the special clothing and enter the training site. It was a railway car… Continue

Exercise and sugar low is hell

Not deliberately so but I have been much stricter with the amounts and types of food I am eating of late. Coupled with my exercise I have lost a considerable amount of fat from my frame. I am well chuffed with that.
But.
The side effect is waking up with a healthy BS range and then exercising and going lower than feels comfortable. I enjoy putting my body and mind under pressure to see what happens and how it feels.
I can now report without any doubt that my mind goes into a very negative place… Continue

Nice peaks

Into Marlborough for an eye test. All good.
Checked out their new range of prescription sunglasses - from America. They look and feel great so I am getting a price for my specifications.

The ride was short but fun.

How to relax - self meditation sort of

I work in a high pressure job and I take a lot of thinking home with me. I do manage to relax a lot on the way home as I find my commuting exercise helps greatly. But I have learnt a technique to do whilst laying in bed. This has been perfected to go to sleep at any time, especially after night shift etc.

Lie down and get into your normal position for sleeping. It is very important that once you are in this position you must be comfortable and do not move again. I often think I feel an itch but… Continue

Mmm must have been painful getting back on the bike, although the k's you do would be painful all the time for me!!
Nicky would have appreciated you looking after her and also admitting how hard it is, us women love that!
It has been raining A LOT, but as you say, well needed, it's the wind that isn't pleasant, it has been pretty constant for over a week, makes people pretty grumpy!
Glad all is good with you. x
