We've gone from lows to highs--he's been consistently high for several days now despite having gone back to the original dose of Lantus. Only thing we can figure out is that it's related to his teething. It's always something.

Eric still isn't really old enough for the whole Santa thing but Nate's pretty into it this year!

Dear Friend
After goind thru your text I feel that U have 2 problems-Swelling over ankles and neuritic symptoms such as numbenss and pain in leags.

Regarding the first one, I need to know the generic names of your medication, since some anti diabetic pills such as Piogliatazone too can cause swelling. Another common cause is hypertension, besisdes many which I don't intend to talk unless commoner ones have been ruled out.
Regarding neuritic symptoms, they might be due to diabetes or Alcohol. You must remain in touch with some Diabetologist and should pay regular visits.

If you've got relatives with celiac, you DEFINITELY should get checked out for it! It's known to have a genetic component, and with 3 relatives all being diagnosed, it sounds like there's a pretty good chance you have it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if, given what I've been reading about it lately for my job (medical editor), that's what's preventing you from absorbing your food and that's why your sugars stay so low. I know it stinks to think about giving up stuff like bread and pasta and all that, but there are lots of good alternatives to wheat flour on the market now and I'm told by people who know that if you have problems with gluten, the difference it makes once you give it up is incredible--not just digestive stuff, but joint pain, fatigue, sinus problems, and a lot of other "little" things you get used to over time.

You know, having just read the rest of your comment, I think there might be something else going on there beyond diabetes. You might have some sort of sensitivity that's affecting the way your body processes food into glucose. Like maybe you're lactose or gluten intolerant? If your digestive tract isn't processing the food well because you lack digestive enzymes or some similar reason, it would account for why you're crashing all the time—you're eating the carbs but they're not being absorbed in your gut, so as a result the insulin brings you down a lot farther than you should be.

Ah, I guess I didn't mention I've already done the teenage thing—I raised Mark's two kids, a boy and a girl, long before we had Nate and Eric. The boy is now 18 and in the Army, the girl is 15 and lives with us, and I was effectively their mother from the time they were 10 and 7, respectively. So I know all about the adolescent years and the bickering that goes on! Hopefully my prior experience will help with my boys!

I find it AMAZING that your doctor started you on a medication without telling you what the problem was. HOw exactly could this doctor expect you to keep tabs on your glucose level if you don't even know you need to? That's just insane. Good thing you have a new doctor, one who'll tell you what's wrong and hopefully gives you more info on how to fix it than just telling you "here take these pills!"
