"Just monitor your blood sugar to see what is happening. 35 units of Humalog IM could work very fast and hard."

I might have just injected myself with 30 units of air. Problem?

Okay, I know this makes me sound completely irresponsible, but here's the background: I tend to give myself too much insulin, so my family has locked up my insulin and will occasionally prepare my shots for me.Tonight, when I gave myself my 35 units of humalog in the muscle, it felt as if most of the syringe was filled with air. (You probably know what I mean; when you push in insulin, there's a solid feel to it, as if you have to push it; when you push in air, it slides in with no resistance…See More

So I go to the doctor's office yesterday and get my hbA1C checked. Since it only takes about 10 minutes to get the results, I sit in the waiting area for them. I guess the lab guy didn't know I was diabetic, because he comes out and says, "It's 4.8. That's normal. You don't need to worry. You're not diabetic." He gives me an encouraging smile, as if I'm really lucky because this means I don't have diabetes. And I want to bang my head against the wall. (My doctor won't let me get a pump till I take my A1C up to 5.5.)

Struggling with highs

Posted on April 12, 2011 at 11:11am 8 Comments

I'm too lazy to actually, you know, blog. But I feel the need to write about this, so I'm going to put it up here.

Ever since diagnosis, I've had a huge (HUGE!) problem with high blood sugars. I get anxious and panicky and overinject myself with insulin. This causes all sorts of problems.

I got a Dexcom a couple of weeks ago and, maybe because of that or maybe because I'm really bored at work, I decided to try to work on this. So I wake up this morning at 95 (yay!). But my… Continue

Anna, if you're using two bottles of Humalog a month, that's about 66 units per day. That sounds way too high for a young girl (sorry but 20's is young to me). I take a lot less insulin than that per day and I'm a 6'5" T1 male. But it also makes me wonder whether you are taking enough basal insulin (Lantus or Levemir) - I certainly hope you're not taking only Humalog? Taking too little basal insulin can lead to bouncing blood sugars like you've reported in some of your earlier posts.

Let me know if you are still getting wildly erratic blood sugars, since I was able to greatly improve my blood sugar stability - and it involved taking more basal insulin, much less bolus insulin, and less insulin overall (I was being over-medicated, which surprisingly gave me both high and low blood sugars). I can explain how I figured out what was going on for me if you're interested.

Anna, saw your post on JuJu's blog, "Lost".

YMMV with the emphasis on MAY, but I would be highly suspicious of thinking you are "fine" after so many low BG episodes. The losses may be minor, but they do accumulate over time. Be careful out there!

Mike
