Extreme Places You’ve Been….and how it affected your Diabetes.

Posted on April 5, 2011 at 5:19pm 2 Comments

Thought I would write this blog to hear about other peoples experiences with their Diabetes when going to extreme, different or just plain out there places. How did it affect your Diabetes and what steps did you take to keep it under control?

So to start off, I’ll tell you one of mine…..

“So there I was in my back garden, when suddenly this bright light appeared in the sky….” Hahahaha not THAT out there 

About 5 years ago I was working for a company that had a maintenance… Continue

A Tale of Hypoglycaemia – From scary, to funny and just plain weird!

Posted on March 27, 2011 at 9:33pm 21 Comments

We’ve all pretty much had them in one form or another, and in my time I have experienced a wide range of hypos - some scary, some funny and some just plain weird! I figured that they would make good reading on top of the fact they just may prove educational or help others identify with something they have experienced…

I’ll start with the first two that come to mind when I think of scary hypos (hey it can only get better from here right?)….

No1 scary one happened when I was about… Continue

Hi Guys and Gals....(sorry about the length!)

I have never been a fan of the whole facebook/myspace thing but I finally found a networking site that I couldn’t resist joining :-). For my first blog ever (and I mean ever - not just on this site!) I figured I’d say hello and tell you guys and gals a little about myself.

Firstly, my names Anthony (pronounced Antony – my parents had to be difficult and throw a silent ‘h’ in there!). I’m 34 years old and live in Melbourne, Australia with my partner and 2 kids. I had, what we call in… Continue

Hi Ant! Certainly: It's a1970 Dodge Dart. It used to be all original with the granny sized slant 6 (225) inline block! It was a birthday gift from my gf's grandfather one year, pretty awesome present! I basically drove it into the ground until the engine was about to explode (nearly 100k miles) and then drove it up to Montana where my unlce runs an autobody shop. They pulled it apart completely, repainted it original yellow. We opted to go with a 318 engine this time (440 was also option but price and mileage were factors at the time), new wheels, pulled chrome stripe off sides, added scoops, almost all of which my uncles and cousins did. I pulled the seats and refinished with new leather once it was back in California, and it's been just small little things ever since. Last major piece is a steering wheel, but i have not found a good replacement yet, losing hope to find a suitable replacement like the original. Of course, engine sizes now don't translate well to older american engine sizes so i have no idea what it would be in modern terms. I think my uncle said it'd get around 220hp or so, for a relatively lihghtweight frame it's not too shabby. With proper tune-up, it's got great pick up too, but it's tuned for regular street driving right now. Actually blew up the first 318 block, but it was under warranty so we replaced it locally in California. I need to take it back to my uncle some day so he can teach me how to tune it properly, heh. Lots of pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/catdirt/sets/72157617879747299/ if you have a few minutes free time, even some pre-rebuild shots in there, plus rebuild process and the blown 318.

So you can tell if you are going low? No hypoglycemia unawareness? anyway, it all looks like fun. I like your idea of outracing D.!

Good grief! Racing with insulin. I admire the bravery. In 2006, i passed out driving and totaled my Honda CRV just driving at a regular speed. I had tested 15 minutes before at 144. I remember getting lost and confused, having trouble stopping the car at lights, going over a turnpike overpass and past an elementary school. What happened I'll never figure out. I was really lucky. I got to the end of an isolated road which became just dirt. I went to turn around and smacked right into a bulldozer on the side of the road. The men with the bull dozer called 911. The bulldozer wasn't hurt. So forgive any obnoxious maternal hovering on my part. its an earned trait.
