Journey of The Red Rider

This past Monday I had an experience I had only read about. I was out riding my bike and got hit by a car. Fortunately she only hit by back wheel and sent me spinning. I was doing about 12 mph going through an intersection and this lady did not judge her distance very well. I knew she was going to hit me so I just got ready for impact and braced myself for road rash. I was ok nothing was broken the bike was even fine except the rear tire went flat and my left butt cheek and left forearm were scr… Continue

Saturdays training ride

Yesterday I went out for a 3 hour ride with the group from bike shop. The weather was threatening but the rain held off. It was cloudy and the temps were in the low 80's. My house is 5 miles from the bike shop where the ride starts so I had a bowl of cerial and hopped on the bike and headed to the bike shop. Before I ate my cerial my blood sugar was 101 before the ride started it was 193. Not bad a good place to be before a long ride. The route was not flat. There were some sections where I was… Continue

Hello everyone I am 47 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 2008 after a bad tooth infection almost took my life. When I came to in ICU they told me I had type 1 diabetes, that was the begining of a whole new life for me. After getting out of the hospital 6 weeks after going in I started reading all I could read about diabetes. One day while WAITING and WAITING at the Endo's office I picked up a copy of Diabetes Forecast magazine. In the back of the the magazine was an arti… Continue

I read your comment in the discussion about Lantus. I switched to Levemir last july and after a hard summer with highs and lows because I worked too much, it seems that this insulin is better than Lantus. I have one shot at 7 in the morning of 10 units of Levemir and after I made shots at meals with Apidra (4 or 5 units) but I think I must put less Apidra at dinner because I've low 3 or 4 hours after. Do you eat more than 3 times a day?

Hey Tony! I think I am recovered from DTC now. It was nice to meet you there and do some riding.
I read your posts here about choosing a CGM. You might remember that I use the Freestyle Navigator (Abbott) and put the transmitter on the back of my arm. The receiver is pretty big so I have to put it in the back of my jersey pocket. I know a guy who uses the Dex (also back of the arm) and he clips the receiver to a 'suspender' of his bib shorts when cycling so he can look down and see it easily. I'm not that obsessive about it. I agree that it would be nice to have the CGM mounted on the handlebars like a bike computer, or integrated with a Garmin GPS or something.

Hi Anthony

Yes, I do a fair bit of riding. If you are looking at doing the 2 man RAAM you may want to talk to one of my Team Type 1 teammates, Adam Driscoll. Adam lives just outside DC and won the 2 man category this year. Feel free to hit me with any questions you may have.

Thanks for the friend invite...looking forward to chatting with you.
