Hi Barbie, I saw in a discussion on this site that you have been on 250g of Metformin in January 2009 - did that work for you? When I was diagnosed with LADA in June 2009, my diabetologist put me on 1500g of Metformin and 5 Units of Lantus. I then started a low-carb diet and in mid-February (2010) came off the last Meformin pill (had been slowly reducing it all over the months). Since then, my blood sugar has gone up after breakfast, but since I am only having 2 eggs, I don't think it's food related. So I am starting to take 250mg of Metformin an hour before breakfast to see if that makes any change. I am sure it's just a matter of testing and trying what works, but it would be great to hear from someone who has done it (everybody else seems to start out at 500mg). Do you happen to know how long it takes for metformin to peak (2-4 hours, I read somewhere)?

Hi Barbie, I have a few thoughts... if you're getting the right amount of nutrition, what difference does it make what your weight is? Doctors simply parrot what they read in their medical journals. I'm reasonably certain that the scare over cholesterol is exaggerated and promoted by pharmaceutical companies as a means to an end (you fill in the blanks). As long as one adheres to a healthy diet, gets adequate exercise, and maintains a healthy weight, there should be very little worry about heart health. There are no studies that absolutely link high cholesterol with heart problems. The underlying culprit is arterial/vascular inflammation/deterioration and the resultant higher than normal homocysteine as a result of poor diet and inadequate exercise. One of the sad things about Metformin is the lack of information about some of the bad things it does. I'm convinced beyond any doubt, that like most drugs, it depletes your body of essential nutrients, like potassium. It has become my firm belief, that with proper nutrition and moderate exercise, that we can lower our insulin resistance enough to get by on what we have. Provided that we haven't "worn out" our pancreas. I hope you find what works best for you. I'm glad to hear that you've made the adjustment to a new lifestyle.
