I Think I Need a 'Betes Buddy....

I haven't logged on in quite a while. Truth be told, I'm a busy lady who's way too busy taking care of everyone and everything around me to take the time to focus on myself. I think that's a problem most people have, but diabetics need to be a little selfish sometimes. Being a nurturing person by nature, I let myself get lost in the shuffle and I need to stop.

So, it seems like working in pastry arts...not so great for diabetes. My doctor has asked me to consider leaving my job. Given that I just got my lab results back, I think I should. Apparently inhaling powdered sugar 6 days a week hasn't been doing me any favors. But now I'm in a tricky position. I love my co-workers and I'm great at my job but I need to find something that won't screw up my health. So now I wonder if investing my future in the culinary arts was a poor life… Continue

Wash Your Hands!

I know the importance of sanitation. I wash my hands about a hundred times a day, especially when I'm in the kitchen. I wash them to clean them before I start working with food, I wash them upon returning from a break, I wash them when I go from prepping one item to another, and I wash them when I end up with goopy dough hands. Yeah, I've got this hand washing thing down. But it seems that I've forgotten a step.

I hate to exercise because i can't seem to keep my blood sugar from plummeting. It's illogical for me to change my basal rate completely because i know i'm not going to exercise every single day at the same time each day. But i haven't managed to figure out the right temporary rate yet. This moring i set it to 75% my normal basal rate and set it to last for twice as long as i was going to exercise for. it went low after. I think it might work if i go for 50% of my normal rate for the same… Continue

- You can see I haven't been logging into this site that much. Well, my endo says that I shouldn't leave the sensor in for six days and my pump infusion site in for 3.5 or so days because they could get infected (they're definitely red by the time I take them out). I had previously only used my stomach for the infusion site for about 1.5 years, and early this year was getting pain and significant bleeding, so I've turned to other areas. I'm worried one can "use and area up" but talked w/ a surgeon friend who is himself a type 1 diabetic and uses solely his rear end for both sensor and pump infusion sites and is not worried about it.
