Bernard, welcome to the community. We're happy to have you here. Your A1c is wonderful and it sounds like you're starting to follow technologies to make things easier on yourself for your diabetes control. That's wonderful. I've had Type 1 for nearly 2 decades.

I know there have always been a lot of rumors about blood sugar measuring methods where you won't have to use a finger prick, but even with a continuous glucose monitor (I wear a 5-day sensor in my arm), I still have to poke myself at least 4 times a day to test my blood sugar in the traditional manner.

The truth is that they're really just not there yet with the science. There have been rumors of tattoos that will change with your blood sugar level (and these may actually happen), watches that read your sweat (I used to hear this one as a kid), etc., but as of yet, nothing that will reduce your number of fingerpricks. There is something called alternate site testing (where you prick your forearms (BB King talks about this on commercials), but it's not quite as accurate as finger sticking, so your doctor is probably right to suggest your current therapy.

But here's hoping!!! :) Good luck.

Hi Bernard,
Welcome to the TuDiabetes famliy.

In response to your question about a meter that doesn't poke, to my knowledge there is not such an option to this day. There is a device called Pelikan, that is supposed to reduce the pain associated with lancing to test. There have been a few discussions about it here:
http://tudiabetes.com/main/search/search?q=pelikan

You can read more about it on the Pelikan web site:
http://www.pelikantechnologies.com/products

However, it's not inexpensive, so at the end of the day, even if it doesn't "hurt" as much, it costs more. :S

Hope this helps!
