It's good to hear you're motivated. Yes we all hit bumps along the way that may put us down, but being able to pick yourself up is what it's all about. Diabetes sucks but it's not the end of the world. Keep up the good work John

HALLOWEEN!

I just got invited to a Halloween party at my buddy's place and I was thinking about what i could dress up as... i think i have an idea (as stupid as it is) but i was wondering if anyone else is dressing up and if so, as what? I'm going to be the infamous RED DIABUSTER, I have a one piece red long underwear, a wig, i still haven't made my utility belt or my logo and a blue cape... i'm going to look ridiculous, but i love it

Doctor being a complete DUMB@$$

I just read a post about GPs not agreeing with Endos and it reminded me of something that happened to me a couple years ago so i figured i'd blog about it. 2 years ago I was working at the school and it was the first day back from Christmas holidays. I woke up in the morning and checked my blood and it was 6.1, I showered, ate breakfast, took my insulin and then proceeded to throw it all up. This didn't alarm me too much because my girlfriend had had a flu for a day a couple days before so i jus… Continue

Black eye from good friend...

So this last weekend I went out with the guys and we had a few to drink... perhaps a few too many. Anyway I always have my monitor and insulin with me and i was doing pretty good at checking regularily and my numbers were on average 7. It was around 4 in the morning and my buddy came up and said that I should give the old blood a check. Well we were all pretty drunk and i told my buddy that I was fine. Out of nowhere buddy takes my glasses off of my face and smokes me right in the face and then… Continue

The scariest day of my life...

Well it's been a long time since i thought about the events leading upto the day when my life changed. I was in my first year of highschool trying out for the senior varsity basketball team and i was busting my butt every day pretty much trying to get in shape and make the team. I was always cold, tired, eating like a horse, drinking water like it was going out of style and going to the bathroom whenever i had a spare minute. I knew i didn't feel right but i thought i was just getting the flu or… Continue

Good day. The Leach story was great! He would have had a sparkling career here in Boston but...... he was made to play with Clarke!
Kidding 'bout the Yankees of course. Now may I ask do you follow baseball and if so who?
I am always interested in people's sports allegiances and how they became.
This is a great community to get into. MEt many folks from other parts of the globe. Good times.
take care,

Peter

Hi Billy, What a great comment you left for me - thank you. Caleb gets annoyed with me too :). I try to not overdo it with him and balance freedom, being a kid, etc. with all the D stuff. I worry about burnout and rebelling down the road as he gets more freedom. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who has been through it - like a crystal ball looking into the future. Thank you for taking the time to message me - it means a great deal. You brought a smile to my face (sorry I almost brought a tear to yours). Lo

Gee Billy -

Bobby Clarke and Reggie Leach! Two of the famed Broad Street Bullies best scorers.
Believe it or not I have in front of me (always on my computer table) a hockey card with Leach and Clarke as team scoring leaders. Reggie started as a Bruin and they had no place to play him so they raded him to the Flyers for diddle! Soon he became the Flying 50 goal scorer of the 1970's. One of the worst trades in Bruins history.
Now, I hope you are not going to tell me a Bobby Orr or KAte Smith story next! LOL!
Great hockey memories, I hope they stay with you always. Looking forward to the big hockey game on New Years day at Fenway Park.... B's vs. the Flyers. The best days of my "wonder years" were spent watching these two teams tangle.
I hope you are not a Yankees fan?!
best wishes ,....

Thanls for the note! I have been waiting for someone to recognize who my homepage photo was! In my youth Bobby Clarke was the greatest! Yes, I knew he was from Flin Flon. I believe he lives in NJ now just a little bit from Philly.
For almost 10 years I had regular communications with him via snail mail. I was lucky enough to see every Flyers game at the old Boston Garden and sit directly behind the Flyer bench. Step dad had connections! I was always greeted by Bob and sometimes other players.
He was my hero, when I was a boy. We also made the treck to Philly for a few games as well. I wanted to be a real fan not just a fly by nighter.
So, does Flin Flon hold a special place for Bob or is he one of many who went on to the NHL? I am guessing that as a HOF'r he must get some royal treament when he is back home.
I wish you well in your diabetes management and in life altogether. Diabetes should be a very small part of living well!

BTW, don't worry about the LAntus stuff. I went to a camp for boys with diabetes for 15 years. My parents signed many releases allowing us "to try things" during certain summers. When you get to the bottom of all these studies the variables are out of this world and unrealistic. For instance, one of the sweeteners may cause cancer, as it did in lab mice, if you drink the equivalent of 24 cases of 12 ounce cans and eat the cans as well! I think the mice died from the metal being injected into them not the chemicals.
Let's face it though, no human will ever drink and eat 24 cases of soda (or as we call it tonic)!
Feel free to bounce back questions anytime and.......GO FLYERS !! (of course after the Bruins)
best wishes,

Knoxs dad

Thank you, Billy. I'm still chuckling over your idea of the 'firing range'. That lifted my mood. I'm grateful for friends like you at tudiabetes.

Hi Billy, as for the Lantus/cancer deal, it was on a post that Astrid put on another section and I couldn't find anything that ties the two together. I think that she heard something and it scared her a bit to want to change to another long acting insulin.

I wish I had the coverage from above the boarder, but I'm on Medicade of Washington. I have been on it for years since my salary and now SSI is too low. It helps out but it tends to be lacking in some areas.
