Welcome to my page!

Where do I start? I was diagnosed about 3 years ago by my sister (who is a nurse working for my primary care physician, and a type 1 diabetic as well). Oddly enough, the two of us are the only known type 1 diabetics in 3 generations of my family's history, and both of us were diagnosed at the same age!

The diagnosis completely changed my career goals. I decided to apply for pharmacy programs after learning about the Asheville project, in which pharmacists play a key role in helping diabetics manage their condition. So now I'm attending the University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN, to learn to be a specializing pharmacists like those in Asheville, while also learning quite a bit about conducting laboratory research as well.

One more thing... It's easy just to think of a pharmacist as the person who counts by 5's, sticks a label on a bottle, and takes your money. Remember that we're health care professionals too, and the ones best trained in drug therapy. Don't be afraid to get counseling from the pharmacist... he\she can be very valuable in helping you optimize your diabetes regimen, or any other disease treatment for that matter.

Back to the lab...

Posted on May 19, 2008 at 2:10pm 0 Comments

It's about time for an update, though not a lot has happened since the last post... I survived the first year of pharmacy school. Now I get to work in UT's lab full time until August, which I'm looking forward to. We're trying out a new compound that may provide us diabetics a medication that's similar in activity to those prednisone, without the blood sugar spiking problem seen with those glucocorticoids. It's VERY early in testing, so we don't want to jump the gun too much... and I can't give… Continue

So it's been a great couple of days. I managed to survive yet another round of testing, and I think they all went pretty well.... but on to the real news :)

If you've read any of my blog posts, you know that I've been one of the Vice-Chairs for the Academy of Student Pharmacists Operation: Diabetes committee here at UT Memphis. Well, I was recently informed that I will soon be taking one of the Co-Chair positions for next year! Now I'll be able to really influence the committee by… Continue

Happy Holidays!

Well I managed to survive my first semester of pharmacy school! Now I get a few weeks to relax for a while. Also I realized that I can actually upload stuff to this blog (I'm still relatively new to TuDiabetes), so I've decided to add the PowerPoint that I presented to my fellow pharmacy students after Thanksgiving. Of course, it's written as tips for pharmacists to relay to patients during counseling, but the tips are there nonetheless, so hopefully they can help you guys out. It does lean…

I can't believe my first semester of pharmacy school is nearing its end! I figured I'd try to put up my first blog entry before the whirlwind of finals begins...

I'm a Diabetes Officer for the P1 (Pharmacy Year 1) class in the Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP), which is the student section of the American Pharmacists Association. I must say I've been doing everything I can for the club. So far, I've assisted with various blood glucose and blood pressure screenings around Memphis,…
