Coming Down to the Wire

Posted on September 30, 2009 at 10:00am 2 Comments

Man, I have tried to post a new blog so many times only to be cut off by my 17 month old son. I swear he knows when his dad is on the computer and it signals him to wake up! Anyway, I am in the home stretch with my training for the upcoming Long Beach Half Marathon. I have my last long run this weekend (12 mi) in preparation for the race on the 11th. It's hard for me to really grasp how I made it to this point. When I started working out again last march I was up to about 240 lbs and was have… Continue

Damn the fanny pack!

As I continue to prepare for the upcoming Long Beach half marathon I've had to come to grips with a big bummer.....the fanny pack. As my training has started to include longer and longer runs (up to 8 miles) I realized I needed to have items with me that will keep me safe while I run. Though I feel good about being responsible, I'm definitely jealous of all those folks who can basically roll out of bed and crank out a run without thinking about all the things we have to digest beforehand. I am… Continue

Surviving New Orleans

Posted on July 27, 2009 at 8:55am 0 Comments

Just got back from working a show in New Orleans. The food was a little tough on me but I managed to keep the BS in order for the most part. I have to admit though, it was fun to eat a bunch of fried food knowing that it will be a long time until I do it again! Huge beers in the French Quarter don't help either! Most importantly, I managed to keep the overnight BS in order while I flew solo in a hotel room. Now it's time to get back down to business training for the Long Beach Marathon in… Continue

I have a small neoprene pouch that loops on to my water bottle belt. I carry my meter, finger lance, tissue and test strips in it. I fold the test strips in a piece of foil so that just one edge is exposed. While I am running, I remove the meter and insert the test strip. I walk for less then a minute. to check my BG. I check it twice during a half marathon. I hope this helps. Practice makes perfect.

Bryan, I was not able to access your comment to me. I would like to share my doing athletic events with diabetes with you. I learned some things the hard way; hypoglycemia the day after the event. Somethings were learned through trialand error; I like fig newtons but they are too dry to eat during a run. Other things I learend from other runners. Please send me another note.
