About Me

I graduated from UC Davis last spring, and am returning there in the fall to get a post-bachelors certificate in Classics. I hope to head off to grad school after this program and work towards becoming a professor.

My hobbies include: rock climbing, film making, playing bass (though my jamming friend just moved to Germany), and traveling (saving up for next summer, maybe Greece). I have a cat named Beowulf, and may get a diabetes dog in the near future. I also love going to the farmer's market and cooking with fresh fruits and veggies.

I've had diabetes almost all my life, and the best friends that I've ever had were fellow diabetics. I guess we're just sweeter human beings (yeah, I also tell bad jokes).

Low Blood Sugar Monster: I DESTROY YOUR HOME RAWR

Posted on February 20, 2011 at 10:40am 2 Comments

I'm thinking I need to rethink everything I own, so that Low Carly Monster doesn't destroy everything.

Over the past week I have broken two valuable items while low (and yes, I've been adjusting my basal accordingly).

Item 1: my Burberry glasses.

I can't really afford anything with a name, so when my mom (thinking that I should look like a professional rather than the grungy grad student I am) bought me these frames I was very thankful. Fast forward to last… Continue

Sooooo embarrassed!

Posted on February 24, 2010 at 12:31pm 18 Comments

So I had class yesterday (a graduate course taught by a guess professor who is really well known, with a bunch of other grad students from another university), and I started feeling my bloodsugar drop about 15 minutes before class let out. I knew I could make it through the next 15 minutes before getting a snack outside.

But then, I was called on to translate something. It's the first time I was called upon in the entire term, and there I was trying to figure out Proto-Italic with a… Continue

Week of Continuous Glucose Monitor

Posted on January 6, 2009 at 10:31am 0 Comments

Starting yesterday I got a CGM for a week. Yay! Now I'm a super diabetic. Comments on it so far are:

It is bossy (when my pump tells me to test, I feel like it says, "Hey, just to let you know, you should test if you want." The CGM says "You must test NOW!!!!!!!!" It's hard to explain....)

It talks a lot

It's slightly uncomfortable, but no worse than the old pump sets

Now for a question. When it was put in (my diabetic educator did it for me) it… Continue

GRE's do not go with Diabetes

Posted on October 6, 2008 at 7:24pm 5 Comments

So I am taking the GRE's (graduate requirement exam) tomorrow, it is the second time I've taken them. Unfortunately, due to changing plans, I did not have the time to get medical clearance (which takes about 3 months), so I have to take them like a normal person. I know how this works:

I can't take my meter.

I can't take juice.

I have to hide my pump.

I pray that I don't get too high or low.

As if I don't have enough to worry about… Continue

I can't keep food down and am freaking out

Posted on September 24, 2008 at 4:26pm 8 Comments

So I got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, and things were going as good as could be expected until this morning. I took vicodin at around 6am, and at 9 am was throwing up. I thought it was because I didn't have enough to eat, so I waited until 2 pm to have vicodin and augmentin, the antibiotic the doctor prescribed with my procedure. I also had ice cream, mashed potatoes, and half an avocado. Two hours later I threw it all up. The doctor's office told me to stop taking the pain killers and… Continue
