About Me

I graduated from UC Davis last spring, and am returning there in the fall to get a post-bachelors certificate in Classics. I hope to head off to grad school after this program and work towards becoming a professor.

My hobbies include: rock climbing, film making, playing bass (though my jamming friend just moved to Germany), and traveling (saving up for next summer, maybe Greece). I have a cat named Beowulf, and may get a diabetes dog in the near future. I also love going to the farmer's market and cooking with fresh fruits and veggies.

I've had diabetes almost all my life, and the best friends that I've ever had were fellow diabetics. I guess we're just sweeter human beings (yeah, I also tell bad jokes).

Week of Continuous Glucose Monitor

Starting yesterday I got a CGM for a week. Yay! Now I'm a super diabetic. Comments on it so far are:

It is bossy (when my pump tells me to test, I feel like it says, "Hey, just to let you know, you should test if you want." The CGM says "You must test NOW!!!!!!!!" It's hard to explain....)

It talks a lot

It's slightly uncomfortable, but no worse than the old pump sets

Now for a question. When it was put in (my diabetic educator did it for me) it bled a little, which she said was fine. I fee… Continue

GRE's do not go with Diabetes

So I am taking the GRE's (graduate requirement exam) tomorrow, it is the second time I've taken them. Unfortunately, due to changing plans, I did not have the time to get medical clearance (which takes about 3 months), so I have to take them like a normal person. I know how this works:

I can't take my meter.

I can't take juice.

I have to hide my pump.

I pray that I don't get too high or low.

As if I don't have enough to worry about tomorrow....

Last time I took them, I tested during the br… Continue

I can't keep food down and am freaking out

So I got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday, and things were going as good as could be expected until this morning. I took vicodin at around 6am, and at 9 am was throwing up. I thought it was because I didn't have enough to eat, so I waited until 2 pm to have vicodin and augmentin, the antibiotic the doctor prescribed with my procedure. I also had ice cream, mashed potatoes, and half an avocado. Two hours later I threw it all up. The doctor's office told me to stop taking the pain killers and ant… Continue

Wish me luck!

So tomorrow at 9:00am Pacific Time, I will lose a part of me.

Well, four parts of me--my wisdom teeth :-/.

Besides being utterly terrified, I'm a bit nervous about the 'betes, but here is the plan my diabetes educator and I worked out:

6:00 am- Wake up and test
7:00-7:30- Set Temp Basal to 50%
9:00- Remove unwanted molars
9:45-11:00(however long procedure lasts)- Have mother test bloodsugar. Administer glucagon if needed, set basal back to normal if not.

Test every 2-4 hours for the next day… Continue

Low dreams and waking up low

So I have this dream that I'm in a pond with my mom, and we are being chased by poisonous water snakes. It was quite vivid.

I wake up, and after thinking 'well that was a weird dream,' I realize that I can't move my legs because they have that wobbly feeling. I stay put for a while, mustering up the will to grab my emergency juice, which is on the floor, next to my bed. But that might as well be a mile away. I think maybe I can just go back to sleep and deal with it later.

Nope, can't sleep, s… Continue

I grew up in Davis and have been diabetic pretty much forever as well. I moved away from the area because my husband is in the army so we are in the Fort Riley area now. Good luck with your diabetes!

Thanks Carly! Where was the picture of you with the ruins behind you taken? It's absolutely beautiful and looks oddly familiar. I was an art history major so I'm thinking I probably learned about it in class (and then subsequently forgot it, apparently, haha)
