I can not get insurance unless it is through my employer's group plan. I can not even get life insurance. Nobody wants to touch you. I have enough life insurance through my employer to pay for my funeral and the house. That is about it. Nothing fo...

A warm welcome for my friends

My name is Caro and I am originally from Switzerland, we moved to New York about 6 years ago. I have a husband (third kid), two kids and two dogs. My son is all grown up, he lives in Switzerland, and my daughter is 10 years old and was recently diagnosed with t1. This was a great shock for all of us, all her life she was such a healthy kid and then in the blink of an eye, everything changes and she has a chronic illness - it sucks!!!!!! But what can you do, we have to deal with it and the way Jen deals with it is just amazing, don't get me wrong she has her moments, where she cries and says how much she hates diabetes, but for the most part she just does what she has to do and lives her life.

Vancouver, here we come!

Tomorrow early in the morning, we will be leaving for a family vacation to Vancouver, Canada. This will be our first trip since dx. The plane ride is about 6 and something hours from here, I hope they won't give us a hard time with the supplies and I also want to bring some juice, just in case we sit on the runway for hours, and nobody serves anything. We have a letter from her endo, which also states that she needs the juice!!!

We are very excited, since Vancouver and its surroundings… Continue

SICKO

My husband and I saw the movie SICKO from Michael Moore today, and it was a real eye opener for me. People are not being treated in hospitals, because they have no insurance or the wrong one!!! How can anybody be so heartless? In the movie they show an insured mother, who's 18 month old daughter gets a very high fever, she calls 911, the ambulance takes the girl to the hospital and there they don't treat the baby, because their insurance pays only for certain hospitals and the mom had no money t… Continue

Hey. Yeah, the house feels a little empty. But she has visitation with her dad each week, so I am kind of used to that. That I think is why I am a little sad. She was at her dad's on Wednesday through Sunday, at which point we took her up to camp. So she was out of the house for four days prior and now she will be gone for another five days. That just seems like a really long time. But I did take the day off on Friday and spent time with her all day, so we spent some good time together then.

Samantha does not do theatre. The closest she's ever come was when she played "Mother Rabbit" in her kindergarten musical. LOL! She was the only one who memorized all of her lines and she had a solo (she also has an amazing singing voice -- lord only knows where she got it, certainly not from me). She has always wanted to be involved in theatre more seriously and I tried to sign her up for classes at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, but visitation at her dad's conflicted with the schedule. Her dad signed her up for softball last year and this year and it conflicts with my schedule some days but we still do it, so I think I will sign her up in the fall no matter what. This is the time for her to get involved when she is young and can still learn a lot.

My cousin is an off-Broadway actress, she does mostly classical pieces, a lot of Shakespeare. Anyway she started young and graduated from Julliard. So she's given us lots of advice about getting Samantha started at a young age. Anywway, I am glad Jen has the show to keep her busy. She really seems to love it!

Hi Caro,

Griffin's doing great on the omnipod. I feel a little like an insulet rep whenever I talk about the pod, but it has worked great for us. If Griffin were older we might be thinking about CGMS, but one site on his little body is enough.

He does not understand about Pippin. We told him that he wasn't coming back and he shopuld say goodbye, so he gave him a very happy dry-eyed goodbye hug. Afterwards, Cooper said, "Don't you understand, Griffin? Pippin is never, ever coming back. And Griffin just chirped, "No." It gave me a little smile.

Hey, Caro! Thanks for asking about camp. I am glad she is there and I am sure she is having a blast. They are probably still up and doing fun things (they don't head to bed until 10 pm and wake up at 6am!!!). But I already miss her. :( I am kind sad, but I know these are just growing pains. This adventure will be great for both of us. It will show her that she can go away without us and have a great time and everything will be okay. And it will show me the exact same thing!!! I guess it is just hard to turn that vigilance off ... the vigilance that comes with being the parent and sole-protector of a child with diabetes.

How are things with you guys? I looked up The Color Purple on the net the other day and was showing Samantha the pic of Jen and all of the actors in the show. Samantha has always wanted to be an actress, so she was so impressed that Jen was in a Broadway show!

Hey Caro,
Thanks for the note. I sometimes wonder about the positive attitude, but who can deny that this disease can be a tremendous drag? May as well take lemons and turn it into lemonaide, eh? I'm pretty lucky that I am as healthy as I am (no complications or noticable signs - even tho my A1C's have consistently been above 8 for years and years.) When I was diagnosed (age 4) my doctor told my mom not to worry too much about giving me a special diet or denying me - my mom took that to heart and so I never felt like a sick person, (well...). She cares deeply, of course, but she refused to bring me to the doctor every few weeks or months. Twice a year we used to drive for an hour to the best doctor in CT. In the end the doctors won't do that much for me, it's ultimately up to me. Somehow, I've survived/thrived some amazing adventures, foolish behaviors, being penniless-ness and now graduate school. I guess I just refuse to be labelled or limited - even by myself. Words have power, so to think a number is bad doesn't help - but to think of it as 'out of range' makes more sense. Anyway, I eat chocolate and ice cream and I'm not ashamed;D. May Jen and I both bring down our damned A1C's.

Ahh we remember the early days, A1c will get better and things will get easier. We switched to pens soon after dx and we find them to be easy to use and carry. Tip: Ask your Endo for freebies on your meters. They will also give you the insulin pens just ask. We have also found that the accucheck lancet devices are the easiest to use and least painfull.

Cooper is doing OK. Pippin used to sleep with him, so he had a little trouble sleeping last night, but it will get better.

Are you guys starting to think about about pumping? I know it's not for everyone, but it was a godsend for us.
