- Both my son and I are musicians I play classical guitar and he plays and teaches cello. We both live in the same household. My husband died last year, and recently my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We've had a lot to deal with emotionally.
First and foremost we are learning how to use insulin effectively along with lowering carbs to bring down the bg levels. Our ultimate goal is to learn how to effectively manage the condition over the long term while avoiding the complications of diabetes. I trust the advice of people who have diabetes because it seems they know more from experience how to live successfully with diabetes. I'm especially influenced by Dr. Bernstein, and we are trying to follow his guide to diet and insulin use. My son is being treated at Joslin Diabetes Center. I thought the dietary information that we were given was very outdated, the high carb, low fat type of advice. Also, we were just handed a print out guide that told us what fixed amount of insulin to inject per the bg reading before meals.- not good diabetes education, nor effective control. I think people are really on their own when it comes to managing the condition.

Wow, Cary you've had a bad year. I work in Hopkinton, if you ever want to meet for a cup of coffee and a vent session do let me know.
I was originally diagnosed as a teen. I'm now seeing a great endo in Nashua, NH. I can really recommend her, let me know if you want her name.
I'd recommend getting a copy of the book Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner, it's a good read, informative and funny in places.
