- I am a professional ballet dancer originally from Canada. During my first month at my first ballet company I was diagnosed. It was such a tough experience dealing with a difficult artistic director and learning how to dance and perform while maintaining good control. Everything that worked before was now obsolete. What's a ballerina to do?
I now dance with a new ballet company and a modern company. They are amazing. They support me and my journey through diabetes and I am so incredibly lucky to have a good work environment now. My diabetes benefits from my dancing and my dancing is enriched from my diabetes.
I almost quit ballet after my diagnosis as well as a terrible injury requiring surgery. I had a bad low that caused me to fall and damage my ankle. So this year has been tough. I wondered if this was the right career for a Type 1 but I kept going. Now I am stronger than ever and would never let diabetes get in my way again.
Currently I am a Pre-Med student working my butt off to be a pediatric endocrinologist. I plan on beginning med school in two years. So two more glorious years of ballet! Then I can dance with medicine!
My family has been amazing as well as my Endocrinologist. Also, my friends from diabetes camp (Dtreat) I have a great support system and I am thankful for everything I have.

Great to see all you are accomplishing, love the blog and videos.
Wish I could send them to the University I went to for ballet...their attitude was that diabetics do not make good dancers.

alwaystempted said… - I had lots of problems when I took shots. I've always have had a problem with random lows. They came to the conclusion that I would do better without having a bulk amount of Lantus in me. So for now I've been on the pump for 8 months. It's soooooo much better. The CGM is tricky but I'm slowly figuring it out. I've got to remember check my actual BG if I make corrections due to what it says.
Have you had issues taking medicines yet? I get affected pretty bad by cold medicines and head ache medicines.
