I look on diabetes as challenge. Neither a good or bad challenge. It's not a curse and it's certainly not a blessing, lol. It just IS!! Yes I occasionally remind myself that this is a dangerous condition because without that reminder I might forg...

Yours is a story I admire. I think more and more we have to advocate for ourselves. IE, the whole thing about women's health in the last weeks....but even with diabetes, if we don't ask, look, hunt seek out information, we aren't going to know any...

Hi, Cathy. Yes, your friend (and you) will have a lot of questions regarding insulin usage. As type 1s, we need insulin every hour of every day or our bodies starve and our blood sugars rise to levels far above 200s. So, like others have said, we'...

When I was dxed in the 1950s I was told to stay away from sweets and eat very little starches. My real education began in the 1990s.

I think the dicussion got off track. Cathy posted that her friend was put on insulin , things are not working out for the friend, help me understand what insulin is all about. Her friend does not understand diabetes. I suggested to Cathy to help h...

Lantus is a basal insulin. Type 1s & some Type 2s on MDIs (multiple daily injections, as opposed to pumps) take basal insulin (one or two injections daily) & rapid acting for meals. Type 1s can't eat whatever they want simply because they're takin...

Cathy, Your friend needs Diabetes Education. No matter what your friend takes, metformin, insulin she needs to understand how to manage her diabetes. Help your friend seek out a Endo with a Certified Diabetes Educator. there are many factors in ma...

I'm not confused. I'm trying to HELP. You will get more germane responses from folks with T2. There are quite a few T2's who use insulin and because their disease is somewhat different than a T1's you would be better off to go to the T2 forum. Bei...

Cathy, You're talking about insulin in regard to someone who has Type 2. The issues surrounding blood sugar/insulin/etc are a lot different from those for people with Type 1. I'm curious -- and not trying to start a fight :) -- why do you think ...

I've learned things from the web, various diabetes magazines and my support group. I learn something new all the time, which is great. But I do find myself educating people on diabetes. I'm always floored at how much ignorance is really out there ...

HB, I basically do the same thing, I'll dig until I find my answers....and for some that's just such work. Hey, this is my body, my life, I want to know. I use the web a lot too, but sometimes there are specific question to me, that I need a doc's...

NOPE Dave, I am talking about insulin.....I can do T2 questions, but am not that versed in T1....sorry to confuse you.

Are you kidding, that ain't going to happen. She is the gal that doesn't care, and thinks that taking insulin is going to solve all the problems. Talk to her doc...nope, won't happen.

You are asking about T2 issues (metformin). try the T2 forum instead of this forum.

Starting to lose the weight

I've been on a low carb diet for the diabetes, but got a benefit in losing 10 lbs. YIPEE. So now, I have 50 left to go and I am psyched.....but yet, I do have to keep in mind the diabetes and numbers.

My plan for this next pound is to exercise in the pool, as the bike is really hurting my knees.

I will make a menus again rather than winging it each night.

I will make sure that I take readings three times a day, once AM; once after lunch and once before bed.

DRINK water, water, water....

I'm… Continue

Today reality sort of set in

My friend got her diagnosis today, yep, what she has been hoping for has happened for her....Thursday, she will officially be on insulin. I question her happiness about this, but it's her, she has been waiting for this moment for a long time, like people wait for a baby. Now she can eat anything she wants, drink anything she wants. And to make things even better her PA made an appointment for her with the gastric bypass doc. I'm puzzled, I'm confused, but most of all I am trying to be a good fri… Continue

I'm NOT the Queen of Diabetes, I am NO expert

Well, I started the thread "People who just don't care about their diabetes" or something like that. On Monday, my friend will go to the doctor for her 6 month checkup for her diabetes. She is finally and a little late worried about what the results will be. In her once in a lifetime finger poke today, her numbers were in the 300's. She is tired all the time, cranky, ornery, mean spirited and frankly a b**ch. Yet, today, she asked me to go with her for her appointment. She needs someone who know… Continue

I'm done, so angry with DH and DS ---- Ranting

Today is my youngest son's 22 birthday. NO I didn't expect him to sit at home with mom, but I did expect a sort of "gee, Mom and Dad thank you for having me". Nope I can't even write what he said to me, it had something to do with unruly dogs eating his lip balm; and his moving.

THEN, finances are a little tight around here. I had to take in a winter coat to be able to stay warm this winter. I asked in JULY to go and look and put one on layaway for the season. I have lost 50+ lbs and my current… Continue

It's me again --- I've had to decide and chose

This weekend brought an "AHA" moment to me, and even though it's not the most polite, kind or tolerant thought I've ever had, it's the truth. Let me explain, I have friends who are diabetics, with labels, but who don't/won't take care of themselves.
For the most part they are all overweight, I weigh the least at 205...so we make quite the team when we walk anywhere.
By not taking care of themselves, I mean, they don't take their meds, they don't do numbers, they don't eat properly. I on the othe… Continue
