Carb Burn Rate?

Any experience measuring the rate carbs are burnt when exercising? I used a CGM for the first time in a couple years a couple weeks ago and found that I went through about 240 carbs in about 5 hours but that my sugars were still moving downward - seems like far more carbs than I would have thought might be needed but wondering if others had any experience. Any reccommendations for anything to eat that will keep raising the sugars over long period of time?See More

I am a diabetic, Utah resident, and love pasting on the skins and touring up the mountains in the Wasatch Backcountry!

I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 2 and six months after that I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. For my whole life I hid the fact that I was diabetic from every person I knew, at every moment possible. I started using an insulin pump when I was 12, and having grown up in San Diego, spent most of my free time surfing where the infusion set was clearly visible. Still, I never gave anyone anything more than a quick answer as to what it was. For my whole life, until the last few months, I took the medical challenges that I had faced as nothing, and tried to keep them a secret and keep living a strong and healthy life. In the last year I underwent brain surgery at the University of Utah where I had a portion of one of my temporal lobe removed, which has since cured the problems that I had faced with epilepsy. Following the surgery I spent a short amount of time recovering in the hospital, and a few days catching my breath at home. It was almost immediately after my release that I realised that I had sat still long enough and I needed to get out. I then began running daily, mountain biking up the canyons around my house, summitting peaks in the Wasatch range, and have not been able to sit still since then!

I went out backcountry ski touring with some friends recently and for the first time used a continuous glucose monitoring devices to try and put the puzzle pieces together so that my sugars wouldn't drop every time I went out. Lat tiem I went out, I took in about 240 carbs which lasted me about 3 hours, +/-5 miles, and about 3200' vertical gain, and am very proud that I kept my sugars in the 160-180 range! (I like being a by higher when off the beaten path)

I currently work as a mechanical engineer for a global organization in our office in Salt Lake but it has recently registered that I want to use my education and athletic passion to advance the studies and science of diabetes research and control.

Welcome to the family! On this forum you will learn so much. Most of all you will learn that you are not alone. Everyone here is supportive and will provide answers to your questions. Search the site for answers. Read the discussions and blogs for information. There are videos to help you understand diabetes and its treatment. Most of all there is family to talk to and even to vent to, if needed. Welcome home.
