Mine was 116. Not too bad but a little higher than I like the FBG. Beats the 300s I used to wake up with, though!

I use cottage cheese and the SF jello mix, dry, to make a yummy dessert or breakfast. It works!

I switched to an Easy Pro Plus glucometer from Target because where I live the strips are the least expensive of all. I don't have insurance, either, but have gone without some things here and there to ensure I have strips.

George, I just did a blog entry about your song. I am so very impressed. I think you said what so many feel and you said it so eloquently! Congrats on that song!

How low was your BG?

I don't have health insurance, either. I take three insulins, something for hypertension, and something for cholesterol. I pay cash for my meds which is one reason I use Novolin N rather than Lantus ($24 a month as opposed to $200 a month), Regula...

I can't speak for others, just myself. I'm very insulin resistant and really don't want to shoot many units of novolog for one slice of bread. If I ate carbs as I'd like to I'd be shooting way more insulin than I want. For me, keeping the insulin ...

I grew up in Dallas but live in Longview now. I have a sister in Dallas, another one down by Houston and my sons both live in Austin. What a great place that is!

Although it's possible that not eating enough can cause the BG to rise, its more likely that you're eating too many grams of carbs a day. I consume less than 40 grams most days and consume less than 20 many days and I still need insulin but I need...

I'm not much of a hot tea fan but do like it iced. I wonder if iced tea would have the same effect. I'll try both ways and see what happens. Thanks!

This is funny, sad and typical. Whatever you can say about know-it-alls and insurance salesmen, I at least had one who tried to work with me. Thanks for the story. Terry

A little more about me...

I'm 46, Type 2, married to a Type 2, and mom to two grown sons. I work retail and as a barista and I'm a part time helper to my mother who is recuperating from a recent car accident and my stepfather who has early stage Dementia.

I controlled my BG for almost 5 years with diet and exercise but the last 4 years have been a roller coaster ride of experimentation with insulin and the resulting highs, lows, and changes time brings.

Right now I use Novolin N twice a day, Novolin R twice a day and Novolog as needed for coverage and correction. I eat a low carb diet, generally staying under 25 grams of carb per day.

It went something like this...

Insurance salesman to me: Any health conditions we should know of?

Me: Well, I have Type 2 diabetes.

Insurance salesman: Do you take medication for it?

Me: I do.

Insurance salesman: What medications do you take for the diabetes?

Me: I take insulin.

Insurance salesman: Oh, you're a Type 1. We don't insure Type 1s.

Me: I'm not a Type 1. I'm a Type 2 who uses insulin along with diet and exercise.

Insurance salesman: No, if you take insulin you're Type 1. I know what I'm talking about.

Me:… Continue

Between a rock & a hard place...a man, a job, and aging parents

Where do I start? My stepfather was diagnosed with dementia about 3 months ago. It's worsening, even with medications. And about a month ago he had a mild stroke. He isn't supposed to drive but keeps trying to drive the vehicle they have...amazingly enough, something is wrong with it and it won't start.

My mother was in a horrible car accident in late January and she's incapacitated for at least two months, possibly much longer. The car she was driving was totaled and since neither of them can… Continue

Taking the plunge...

in joining a health club, that is.

DH and I went to The Institute for Healthy Living today, a new medically-integrated wellness center operated by a local hospital. We had a guided tour and they seem to have a little of everything, including indoor and outdoor walking tracks, fitness and group exercise classes, a large indoor pool, a resistance pool, cold and hot water plunge pools, and an 11,500 square foot strength, conditioning, and cardio fitness room t… Continue

Bad but not surprising A1c result

I took a Reli-On home A1c test Monday, mailed it in the same day and had email tonight letting me know the test result was ready. Five days - not bad!

I logged in and was not surprised to find that it was 8.5. Not good, I know, but considering the fact that I've been out of control and just recently started trying to gain control again it could have been worse. I know 8.5 sucks, really I do! But I'd prepared myself for something more like 10 or 11 or worse. Not that that justifies anything. Oh… Continue

Had to cancel basal test - booo, hiss!

Well, my BG dropped to 73 as I was starting the test so there went that. At least for today. Since I couldn't do the test I ate a lunch of 12 moderately spicy chicken wings with 1 Tablespoon of homemade buttermilk ranch dressing and 1/2 a cup of brussels sprouts, about 8 grams carbs total. BG 20 minutes before eating was 73. Two hours after eating it's 105. Ahh, the wonders of low carb eating!

I have to take my mom to a doctor's appointment tomorrow so I probably won't try the test again until… Continue
