Insurance salesman to me: Any health conditions we should know of?

Me: Well, I have Type 2 diabetes.

Insurance salesman: Do you take medication for it?

Me: I do.

Insurance salesman: What medications do you take for the diabetes?

Me: I take insulin.

Insurance salesman: Oh, you're a Type 1. We don't insure Type 1s.

Me: I'm not a Type 1. I'm a Type 2 who uses insulin along with diet and exercise.

Between a rock & a hard place...a man, a job, and aging parents

Posted on February 18, 2009 at 7:00am 1 Comment

Where do I start? My stepfather was diagnosed with dementia about 3 months ago. It's worsening, even with medications. And about a month ago he had a mild stroke. He isn't supposed to drive but keeps trying to drive the vehicle they have...amazingly enough, something is wrong with it and it won't start.

My mother was in a horrible car accident in late January and she's incapacitated for at least two months, possibly much longer. The car she was driving was totaled and since neither… Continue

Taking the plunge...

in joining a health club, that is.

DH and I went to The Institute for Healthy Living today, a new medically-integrated wellness center operated by a local hospital. We had a guided tour and they seem to have a little of everything, including indoor and outdoor walking tracks, fitness and group exercise classes, a large indoor pool, a resistance pool, cold and hot water plunge pools, and an 11,500 square foot strength, conditioning, and cardio… Continue

Bad but not surprising A1c result

Posted on February 13, 2009 at 10:32pm 3 Comments

I took a Reli-On home A1c test Monday, mailed it in the same day and had email tonight letting me know the test result was ready. Five days - not bad!

I logged in and was not surprised to find that it was 8.5. Not good, I know, but considering the fact that I've been out of control and just recently started trying to gain control again it could have been worse. I know 8.5 sucks, really I do! But I'd prepared myself for something more like 10 or 11 or worse. Not that that justifies… Continue

Had to cancel basal test - booo, hiss!

Posted on February 10, 2009 at 2:14pm 0 Comments

Well, my BG dropped to 73 as I was starting the test so there went that. At least for today. Since I couldn't do the test I ate a lunch of 12 moderately spicy chicken wings with 1 Tablespoon of homemade buttermilk ranch dressing and 1/2 a cup of brussels sprouts, about 8 grams carbs total. BG 20 minutes before eating was 73. Two hours after eating it's 105. Ahh, the wonders of low carb eating!

I have to take my mom to a doctor's appointment tomorrow so I probably won't try the test… Continue
