My dance with diabetes began in the Spring of 1983 when my OB-GYN diagnosed gestational diabetes... at that time, he/they told me I would be fine after the babies (twin boys) were born. No long term consequences. Sixteen years later, in 1999, I went to my family doctor for fatigue. Result was high blood sugar. She told me to change my diet and get some exercise; she'd check me in 6 weeks. I pulled out my old diabetic menus and carb- & exchange-counting information from when I was pregnant, and managed to lose 20 pounds by the time I returned. She was pleased, I felt wonderful, and she only did some minor tests.
We moved to Mississippi 3 months later, and over the next 7 years I slowly gained it back. So, Friday, April 6th, 2006, I was at the doctor's for a physical (required by the university before an international study program). Before I could get home, his nurse called to tell me he wanted to see me on Monday; my blood sugar was "dangerously high" and he wanted to put me on medication immediately.

I was really scared. He put me on 500mg of Metaformin per day, and told me to eliminated all carbs from my diet, get some exercise. A week later when he checked my FBG it was 95! He was flabbergasted and asked me what I had done. Only followed his instructions. He said the med could not account for that much change, that I was "diet-sensitive" -- I must admit that at that point in my life more than half of what I consumed was carbs in one form or another.

He wasn't happy with the drop in my AC1 by mid-May (8.9%, FBG 105, BP 116/71), and put me on 1000 mg of Metaformin per day. Over the next couple of weeks, I lost an additional 20 pounds, which made a total of 30; the first 10 were result of the high BG. By September it had dropped to 5.9%, and to 5.2% when tested in January 2007!! In April 2007 it was back up to 5.9%, and the most recent test (10/31/2007) was 5.4%.

The doctor dropped me from two 500mg per day of metaformin/glucophage to one. He kept talking about my "good control" but I know many days I fall short of eating (& living) the way I should for the greatest long-term benefit. It's a battle every day. And it's tiring. So support like one finds here is essential. Thanks, everyone!

Odd low

Saturday evening, I had an odd incident. From about 5 to 6 pm, we had dinner in with friends at a Chinese buffet we all love. I had a balanced meal even without salad, but did overindulge a bit with desert. It is an over two-hour drive home from where we spent the weekend. Less than half an hour from home, I started feeling nauseous. When I got home, I tested to be sure I was okay from the indulgence, even though I usually set my phone alarm to test at about an hour after I have a large meal lik… Continue

why so difficult?

I'll bet that I have gone shopping online for a medical alert bracelet/charm a dozen or two times since diagnosed. I haven't purchased one yet. I do not understand why they are so expensive.

It feels like just one more way that commercial enterprises know they've got folks by the 'short hairs' and just up the prices cause the know we need something (or think we do).

enough to set me off ...

on a sugar binge??

The day began wonderfully: remembered to take grab my lunch on the way out the door, great music on the radio on the drive to work, Cinnamon Mocha coffee from a great coffee shop where the barista knows just what I want ... even on time for work after making a second trip into the coffee shop to buy a snowman teapot/cup (on 50%) and drop off change for the baristas' tip I forgot to take in the first time.

. . . racing ahead to the 'last straw' . . .

doc's happy

Finally got to see my doctor yesterday. He's happy with the results, and the fact that I've kept off the weight for over a year. He reduced my Metaformin by half, and will check me again in four months. Told me not to worry about checking BG but three times a week. I'd really like to check more than that . . . BUT, when I was worried and checking multiple times a day the last couple months, I got very anxious about it all. Mostly he said to watch for patterns, check at different times a day.

Newest A1C

Despite being very anxious that it was up, my 10/31/2007 HbA1C result was 5.4%.

Needless to say, I am thrilled. Will see the doc after T-day.

Thanks for the blog comment! My moms favorite quilting store has these nights(usually a saturday) where you can just work on whatever quilt you want and everyone brings something to munch on and we just sit and gab until 2am. I was the oddball because I was the only one not quilting. I dont know how to sew on a machine yet. My mom is going to teach me though. I was working on my cross stitch and finishing a beaded bracelet.
