Are they breathing?

I'm going to share something that I don't normally talk about because it makes me sound crazy. If I don't get up every night at 3 am to check my girls' blood sugar, I have overwhelming anxiety that I will wake up to find them dead. So much anxiety that now I wake up at 2:30 am every night without an alarm clock. I doesn't matter how exhausted I am, I will still wake up. The only times I don't are when I am very ill and when I wear one of those stupid hologram bracelets. The hologram bracelet… Continue

Questioning the Man

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 6:33pm 6 Comments

Why do we stop asking why? Or should I say "when" do we stop asking why? As the mother of two T1 girls, I question EVERYTHING, especially the status quo. However, I am reminded that I have behaved in that manner for my entire life. Not only did I not stop asking why, but I ask why not?

I am my daughters' best advocate until they can become their own best advocates. My husband has the "don't question the doctor" disease (which is why our youngest was given Gatorade in the ER at… Continue

We did have a big adjustmet when Lilly was diagnosed, because we knew next to nothing about D. It was so scary, i kept thinking that they must have had it wrong. With Evie we had a feeling that something wasn't right for a while before we got her antibody tests back.  She had some off BG readings, never high enough to be D, but off enough that we knew it wasn't normal. My 5 year old seems to assume that she will also get D. Every once in a while she asks me to check her BG, and she is measures her own food even though she doesn't need to. Evie will remember non d life, since she was 9 at cinical onset, but the rest won't. Even Lilly now has a hard time remebering what it was like before she needed to do checks and shots... Sad that this is the new norm.

hi Daun

Lilly is 7, she was 6 when she was diagnosed, and she was the first. She was also in severe DKA with diagnosis, she actually was in a coma, because we had a misdiagnosis 24 hours earlier at the oncall ped., we didn't take her in to the hospital until she began to be unresponsive.  We found out a month later that she had no natural insulin what-so-ever, so her numbers are still crazy. Evie (Genevieve) is 9, and she was diagnosed this year.  She was caught very early also, so early that the hospital didn't want to admit her, until i pushed them to contact the endo department.  She is doing extremely well, but she had the advantage of getting used to the idea rather than being suprised by it like we were with lilly! so far the 2 little ones are negative for the auto-antibodies, but we know that can change so they will be screened every year.

I just saw on your blog that you get up every night to check on them. i do too, i feel like a zombie, but i am terrified that something will happen during the night. i have a sigh of relief every morning when they wake up and talk to me.  it didn't used to be this bad, until Lilly had a severe low first thing in the morning this summer, and i found her siezing on the living room floor. since then i have been petrified that it could happen in the middle of the night and i wouldn't know!  Lilly is getting a temporary CGM tomorrow and we are in the process of getting our own.  I am hoping this will give us some peace!

i hope to chat with you again!

Congratulations to your new Android phone - and escpecially for supporting TuDiabetes. Although there are plenty of apps I would like to let you know that there is also the Glucosurfer project. Since you are working in Data Management your feedback to our free project is highly appreciated. Just visit the following URL with your Android (without the line breaks):

http://www.glucosurfer.org/tiny?logon
&user=tudiabetes
&password=passme
&language=en

In productive use you would use your own user and password of course. The website of Glucosurfer.org will offer some interesting visualizations of the glucose control.

Hey there D. Just stopping by to say hi to you and your little one's. Hope all is well and we can meet up again soon.

You have to admit, daylight savings and San Diego work pretty well together, right?
