An interesting question. I was diagnosed as LADA the same week that a friend/neighbor's 8 year old daughter was diagnosed as type 1. That really put my diagnosis in the proper perspective, since she will have had diabetes for 34 years by the time ...

Interesting that your BG was as low as it was for the better part of the day...this, though you were cautious, was I feel due to spiritual guidance/divine intervention...the next fast may or may not follow suite.....His omniscience being the balan...

Hi Linda - I gave it a go last Sunday, and here is how it went: Saturday night, I had an early dinner around 6, then skipped my Lantus injection and tested at 122 at 10pm On Sunday morning, I tested at 112 at 7:45 am. I was 85 at 10:40, 103 at ...

Hey Dale...when is this fast planned for? Let me know how it goes! Make sure you keep some quick fix at the ready....just in case! Take care...and be well, linda.

Thanks for all of your input. I had my appointment yesterday with my endocrinologist and my A1c is down slightly to 6.3 and all other things are going well. Given the stability of my diabetes, and the relatively short period of fasting, he had no ...

I don't really take in Caffeine at all because it effects my blood sugars a lot. I am a pump user, and congratulate you on the fact that you still produce insulin! My beta called it quits in 2006. Also I don't think it would be necessary to go col...

The Bible says that when we fast, we should not "show" that we are fasting and complain about hunger. So if you decide to go without coffee, it means you will have to still be nice to your co-workers ;)

Yes...that's quite the little problem!!! I teach....and it might get ugly in the classrooom without my morning cuppa! ;(

I think you are right on with that comment. My wife was reading the responses, and based on my reply to Jenn above, suggested that it sounds like coffee is the thing I should go without. For me, that would truly be a sacrifice, but it would be mos...

My view...my pastor's view of fasting is to give up something meaningful to you! It need not be food related...the idea is to make a sacrifice. With myself, giving up coffee for example, or tudiabetes chats for a week would be truly a meaningful g...

Rebecca - No apology necessary - I wasn't offended, and I only pointed out the distinction because I thought it was relevant to my question. I feel like a diabetic with training wheels on since I still produce insulin and don't yet have to deal w...

I appologize, I missed the LADA designation in your original post and focused on the fact you were only taking Lantus as insulin and doing the rest with diet and exercise. Congratulations for managing like that and still producing your own insulin...

You had me pretty excited up to the no caffeine part. Ouch. But that sounds a lot more workable than cold turkey. Thanks for the response!

Thanks for the suggestion on alternatives to fasting. One of my teammates who is aware of my D suggested the same thing. Not to pick nits, but as a LADA I'm actually a type 1, but I have the great fortune to still be kicking out a fair amount of ...

And so it begins...

I was just officially diagnosed as LADA about in February of 2009.

Although I'd felt generally crappy for a while, I thought it was just getting older or depression. A random physical with my general practitioner in November of 2008 turned up high fasting blood glucose and an A1c of 6.5. That was the first mention of the word "diabetes" for me, and I pretty much ignored it (denial, possibly?). I told my GP that it must be just an aberration, and I would do better on my food intake and exercise… Continue

LOVE your photos, Dale. Before the fibromyalgia hit I was a decent hiker, doing the round-Mt Hood trail several times. And growing up in Minnesota, I was a Lake Lover---canoeing in particular.....Do check out the NW group!.....Judith in Portland

Hey Dale, welcome to tudiabetes! I see you have already found us at the NW group. I grew up an Oregonian but am now a Washingtonian. I was your way this summer when we spent some time at Sun River. My husband's family had a condo there when he was growing up, so was fun to take the kids to where Dad used to hang out. I see you are a newbie. I was a relatively older T1 diagnosis at 26, but have been living 17 healthy years so far. Oops, just gave away my age:) Seriously though, insulin does not have to slow you down...

Welcome, Dale! Your photo's are really cool. I created a group here at TU called "Traveling the World with Diabetes". Several members have uploaded travel photo's that are jaw dropping/amazing. Check it out when you get a second.

Hi Dale,
Welcome to the group. I'm sure you will find loads of support here.
Similar to you, I recently started on Lantus, started out at 15 units and I'm now down to 7. No fast insulin yet, I too control this by eating low glycemic as well a low carb..example a piece of rye bread is not going to spike your levels like a piece of white or whole wheat does. If you you're not familiar with the low glycemic concept I suggest you google it and you'll get some great information.
I really think it's worth looking to the Naturopath and even Homeopath aspect, they are the only people that will try and find the root cause and work to stop of the progres of the beta cell loss or even to reverse depending on what your situation is. I just recently found an amazing Homeopath I'm also working with that came up with a totally different theory then my ND (Naturopath) that's really makes sense to me and was my gut instinct of the cause.
It's a long road working with ND's and Homeopaths and progress is slow, not overnight but I really think it's well worth it.
Hope this helps you out a bit.
