Diabetes and ME
I was diagnosed with type 1 after two rounds of a defective antibiotic. It was given to me because I worked in a hospital setting and caught a penicillin resistant infection twice within a two month period (December 2000 and February 2001). One month later BANG! type 1 diabetes. The sad part about this the drug company knew the ill effects of this drug and rushed to market with it. It was baned in Japan, Europe, and Canada. Our wonderful FDA did not do anything about it until 2006 when they required stronger warning. The Drug company said that they would pull the drug because it was not a big profit for them. That year by May it had sold 75 million dollars worth of drug?
There is a article in the New England Journal of Medicine from 2003 stating how defective the drug was!
My case was treated as a nuisance! I was called a incidental causality.
I was 47 years old when this happen to me. For seven years now I struggle with the day to day problems of this disease. I got sunburned one year and my blood sugars stayed over 500 despite 75-100 units of insulin.... who knew?? I won a jackpot at one of the casinos here and my bld sugars went over 250....who knew I could not have so much luck and cause so much damage!! My trip to Italy was also a big surprise of being so elated seeing historical sites would also raise my blood sugars!
Now in 2006, my endo tells me that my usage of insulin is to high and I am starting to develop insulin resistant diabetes. For the last two years I started a exercise program, with the help of a diabetes training Camp called STROKE SPIN AND STRIDE.
What a difference that program made on my life, my insulin usage is declining and I now have muscles I never knew I could develop.
Yes my HbA1c is a bit high right now, but the whole drug company thing, has just ended.
That was so very stressful. I hope that as more time passes so will the anger and the feeling of being cheated. I am looking forward many new adventures this coming year.
I am so blessed to have one of the best endocrinologist in Connecticut, I now work for a great group of Physicians who understands my needs being a diabetic! I work a 4 day work week.
No more rotating shifts, or exposures that the hospital offered.
The camp taught me activities I never had growing up. I learned to swim, ride a bike and run. My trainers were former Olympic athletes with type 1 diabetes! it was educational, inspirational and motivational. That year at camp I even made Newsweek! I took charge of my life and I am working up to a five days a week at the gym! I look forward to attending many more camps, because we are always learning and changing. while sometimes we forget and need to re-learn. Go TO THIS WEB SITE www.diabetestrainingcamp.com. I look forward to live long, find a cure, and help anyone I can. "In the reality of life" what I tell my patients, "we are all related, we breathe the same air and bleed the same blood. We all have the same hopes and desires. We should treat each other as brothers and sisters as we should care for each other".
may all your dreams and wishes come true,

THE BIGGER QUESTION, IF THEY COULD MAKE A DRUG THAT CAUSED DIABETES, WHY NOT BACK TRACT AND FIND THE SCIENCE AND MAKE THE DRUG THAT CAN CURE IT.
