I never knew any other diabetics when I was growing up. When I was maybe 10 or 11, my mom made me go to a group that was forming at the hospital that I went to. It was for diabetic kids. I hated it. Most of the kids were newly diagnosed and were upset because they couldn't eat Big Mac's anymore. I met one girl who kept trying to commit suicide by taking large doses of insulin when she got overwhelmed. I didn't know how to relate to them. There was no before and after for me, just after. And after was always normal to me. Maybe normal isn't the right word. More like "that's just the way it is." Make sense?

Hi David,
I guess if I'm going to be in a club at least it is exclusive. lol I switched from shots to a pump back in '05. I got tired of carrying needles and insulin with me everywhere. Using a pump gives me alot more freedom. It is sometimes strange when I meet other diabetics though. The first question is always when were you diagnosed. When I tell them I was 11 months old, I get that "look" like they can't quite believe it. Strange getting the look from another diabetic. Do you ever run into that?

Yea I was in an academy and the job is with the major offenders but in a county jail not a state or federal prison. I think the job would be more of a challange if I was still on shots but since ive been on the pump it gives me a little more freedom with diet and eating timelines. ANd yes i have been training on the whole alcohol deal a little at a time, I would like my liver to last me awhile :)
