CYCLEBETES: A Coast to Coast Tandem Bike Relay Across Canada

Posted on January 22, 2009 at 5:30pm 0 Comments

Cyclebetes: It began in 2007 with one promise, one Champion and it spread. It began with a promise that a father made to his daughter. Vancouver businessman Kyle Balagno promised his daughter Taylor he would do everything in his power to help find a cure for her juvenile (type one) diabetes before her 18th birthday. He had 6 years. That commitment spawned the Cyclebetes series of events.

Hey everyone, I hope you all are doing well. It looks like the weather around here is finally going to be nice. It's about time, it has been cold and rainy here which doesn't make good turkey hunting weather.

Well, I have had a busy last 2 months. The U.S. (World Kitchen) closed up our Distribution Centre here in Niagara Falls, Onatrio. My last day was May 9th, but I have been searching for new employment since they told us at the end on March. Well I started getting all the phone calls at… Continue

I don't think I mentioned my sons age. Connor was diagnosed Thanksgiving weekend at 2 1/2 yrs old. He was almost 3 when I started this garbage with my employer.

Well,as I was saying, the OHRC could help me. It is a long process unfortunately. On their website you can order all kinds of publications that inform you of your rights. You can also order publications that will tell you what your employers rights are and what they are obligated to do. I of course ordered all of it, that way I… Continue

Hello everybody. Well I gave a hint of some issues that I was going through last year and I guess I'll tell ya now.

That issue has just been dealt with and now another starts. I won't write the whole story now, but instead I'll write a bit now and some later. This started in Feb. 2007 and I just came to an agreement with my employer last week.

They dragged it on for a year hoping I would give up and go away. I guess they don't know what stubborn is.

It all starts when my… Continue

I encourage them to checkout the excellent LIONS diabetes prevention and awareness program. Call 5 DIABETICS and join me,JULY 30 INSULIN APPRECIATION DAY, in silence,to say THANKS FOR INSULIN, giving hundreds of millions of US a chance to live healthy and productive lives, TODAY.Check out www.restorethebantinghomestead.com and find out why AMIGOS will be selling BLUE ROSES on that day?. This flower was chosen because of its meaning, 'ATTAINING THE IMPOSSIBLE" our mission and motto. You might be interested in checking out A.K.A."BLING GUY BIKING, Richard Holloway, richard.holloway@sympatico.ca, crossing Canada, in a tandem bike, this year.and tell him the AMIGO says check him out. clarence.haynes@sympatico.ca I am a 91 young that is going to WEAR OUT, not RUST OUT.

Thanks Robert. It was a great race and long overdue. It has been a long winter with no racing. Tony seems a little happier now that he has his own team, should be a good year for him.
We have been doing well this year so far. Aside from my work closing nothing much has happened. Connor has been healthy since his tubes were put in his ears and no flu as of yet this year so no hospital stays. The most exciting this year is an across Canada relay I am taking part in. It is called CYCLEBETES, it a a tandem bike relay across Canada. There are teams for every Province, 2 for Ontario. I am part of Team Western Ontario. I will be biking as part of a 10 person team across half of Onatrio since it is much bigger than the other provinces. I will try to add my website link to my homepage so you can check it out. I have tried to put it on here but no luck so far.

Hoope it worked, if not I think I have your email address somewhere.

Connor and I can't wait until Daytona. Gonna have a big feast at my brother inlaws.

I have not been on the site much, I will have to check out your blog to get up to date. I hope all is well for you and I will keep in touch.

Cool Robert. I wasnt home to watch it but I will watch highlights on Nascar.com today. I definitely can't wait to see the pics.
My son is doing good, we are all fighting a cold here and the one nite he had high ketones, 3.7mmol/mg or 66.6mg/dl for your measurement. That is the highest his ketones have ever been. We got it down ok though. We are just tired of being sick this year. If it isn't him it's us. Oh well, gotta think positive. The weather is finally getting nice and we can spend more time outdoors. I hope you are having the time of your life Robert. Enjoy it, we'll watch for ya on TV in case we see ya. All the Best.

Dave and Connor (here's hoping wild thing crashes so Smoke or JR can win one)

Welcome to our growing family David! Is that cute little boy in your pic the one with Type 1? Don't worry too much about him if he is. I was diagnosed 35 years ago and still here!!! If you have any questions just ask them! And I'm here if you need me! My oldset is a Type 1 too!
