ADA/Tour-de-Cure

HEY EVERYBODY . .
A new friend of mine (Meg Murphy) is participating in the Bar Harbor Maine ADA Tour-de-Cure May 18th.
I am awestruck by her energy and commitment as she has no personal / familial ties to diabetes. (Nor is she big into bicycling . . )
If you don't know anyone else riding, and you'd like to donate to the ADA, please consider helping her make her fundraising goal of $500. Her website to donate is; http://main.diabetes.org/goto

Hey Deb,
Thanks for the kind words! CONGRATS on the CSM job for the Navigator Team!!! Had dinner with Craig George the other night, who told me... You have some great technology in your hands now, and have no doubt you will rock it up there! Hope to see you at ADA.

Initially you do not see her name on there, until you get further into the donation screens. In the comments section, (which only she will see) let her know that I sent you, via Tu Diabetes.

You can't be discouraged. This is an exciting time in terms of the options we have for treatment of both type 1 and 2. The fact that are communities like this one is amazing to me.

By the way, are you on the device end of things? Do you know Dan Crowe from the diabetes, science, and tech community?

Hi again - Too bad about tonight's meet up. If it's in June - that gives me plenty of time to plan for it - which is good. Hopefully, I'll be there. I would LOVE to see all our CITS again... Those were my BEST summers at camp.

Last I heard from Missy, she wasn't doing great healthwise, but she had a really nice partner and a great support system. I haven't heard from her in awhile, but I think I still have her email and I should try to write her again... I'll get back to you if I hear back...

Talk soon.

Unfortunately, in recent years, endocrinology has been relegated to the "safety" category of fellowships, when a medical resident cannot get their first choice. This is happening to a lot of "thought" based specialties, while the procedure based ones are flourishing (cardiology, GI, etc). Clearly, reimbursement has some to do with this trend, but I think that people are also intimidated by the prospect of trying to manage diabetes.

If there was ever a "silver lining," it would be the experience of having diabetes and being able to a least try to see through that potential frustration. I think the biggest difference in my approach to diabetes (vs those endocrinologists without diabetes) is that I tell people "this is your diabetes. I am here to try to give YOU the tools to manage it. I can't manage it for you, I can only steer you in the direction of better control."

I have been fortunate enough to meet a lot of wonderful people because of diabetes. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to hear what works and what doesn't for people on a day to day basis. Thank you so much for your thoughts and encouragement.
