I think it would be wise for me to go back to the Low GI food lists. I am being careful with fruits because I know I can over do them. I sure would like a bowl of kashi Go Lean cereal :) I just have to wait this out for a bit. My A1c was 6 this ti...

Looking at the Glycemic Load 4 and 3 respectively for full cream and skimmed milk and their Glycemic Index 30 and 32, it looks as if they have both have low Glycemic loads which in theory should not cause spikes. I notice Sarah says milk is High G...

Protein and fat can't spike your blood sugar, they digest way too slowly, as in 6-12 hours. They will break down to sugar eventually but it is not fast enough to create a blood sugar spike. If carb digested as slowly as they do it wouldn't spike y...

Hi Debbie - If there's ONE THING I know absolutely, it is that each and every diabetic is totally and completely unique. There are no hard and fast "rules" that work for every single person. As Jeannie said, you have to test A LOT to learn about y...

Everything you eat will make your bg goes up. Even things with 0 carbs like protein and meat can spike your bg. The only way you know is to test a lot. Sometimes if I don't eat for 5 hours my bg goes up.

I know somebody who uses milk to treat lows because it raises their blood sugar very quickly.

I am just now testing again so I'll have to see how I react. Intertesting though that the IR book makes it sound like you can drink milk with no adverse affects. I have found a couple of bread products that are low carb or I just use half that ha...

Debbie, I joined the Spark People web site. There seems to be a lot of information there. I haven't had time to read it all yet, but plan to. I've read some of the threads there, like under Diabetes Management and stuff like that, but they don't seem to be as informed about diabetes as this site is. I guess because this one is dedicated totally to diabetes and not weight loss. I have learned so much from this site, just reading about what other people have been through. It amazes me the number of people from other countries who are on here as well. Are you still having problems with your stomach from the Metformin? hopefully you've adjusted to it by now.

I'm glad to have you as a friend, I love this board, it has taught me SO much since I was diagnosed. But sometimes on these boards it seems the same people talk to each other and it makes me feel somewhat of an "outsider". But everyone has been extremely helpful any time I've had a question or comment.
I also take 1000 of Metformin each day. I take my first one very early in the morning with all my other medications, it's usually about an hour before I actually eat breakfast. Then I take my second one before bed each evening, again with other medications. When I very first started taking it I had a little bit of diahrrea, but other than that it has not upset my stomach at all. But at the time of my diagnosis, I had a killer stomach flu and had been sick and vomiting for 5 days, had pancreatitis and everything. That's how they told me I had diabetes, because they did blood work on me and a CT scan on my pancreas. And once I was diagnosed and started my medication and started feeling better, I realized that my stomach had been bothering me probably for the last year, every time I ate a meal I felt like I had a rock in my belly. That is all gone now, I actually overall feel so much better than I have in quite some time.
My morning bg numbers run around 112-120 now, as a matter of fact they generally stay that level all day, unless I eat a different food as an experiment to see what happens! The highest reading I've had since I started Metformin was 152 and that was after eating peaches....can't do that again. Peaches did that, but one day I ate fried chicken (crispy skin and all) and tested an hour later and I was actually at 101 - I was shocked. I expected fried chicken to be bad but it wasn't. Bad for weight loss, but not bad for my glucose level anyway!

Hi Debbie, nice to meet you. You probably read my post where I was so frustrated with not losing any weight. I'm glad to report that since I was diagnosed on April 20th, I have now lost 13 pounds. It was really slow at first but seems to be coming off easier now. Maybe it took a while for the Metformin to get into my system real well. I'm also eating very low carb, trying to stay under 100 grams of carbs per day, and no more than 1500 calories per day. My doctor swears that Effexor does not cause weight gain, but I don't know if I believe it or not. I wish I could get off the Effexor but I tried once and the withdrawal is pure hell.
Anyway, hopefully you'll start losing again once you've been on the Metformin for a while. I'm pleased that I've lost 13 pounds. I've told myself once I lose 20 pounds my reward is going to be to stuff my face in a huge bag of Lay's potato chips. I miss them so much! I miss them much more than the sugary foods.
