Emily, if it helps, this is my 'normal'. Which may not be the same 'normal' as the next Type 1 diabetic as everyone is different. But this is what works for me:

- acknowledging that I have a very serious and incurable disease that is not going to go away. But that the disease can be controlled.
- Not letting diabetes control me
- testing my blood sugar 10-12 times a day
- knowing my insulin to carb ratio and my insulin correction factor, and knowing this with scientific precision because with diabetes, being obsessive compulsive helps.
- knowing how various foods affect my blood sugar - that means keeping a log of everything you eat so that you can see patterns. I don't log anymore as I already know how most foods affect me
- taking insulin and meds as prescribed
- seeing my doctor for annual reviews

I could go on, but those are the basics.

Each person's 'normal' is different but your boyfriends 'normal' is definitely not healthy.

I hope this helps.

With all best wishes,
Lila

I responded to your post, but please check out the Resources ---> Patient Assistance tab on this site. There are phone numbers listed to a variety of companies that might be able to help out your partner. I realized he may not live in AZ (where you are), but whatever state he's in should be able to provide some help via their Medicaid office. If he's a grad student and doesn't earn a lot, he may qualify for Medicaid.
