When I was a teenager, it was a very difficult time and did not realize it yet. When I had the freedom of being closer to an adult, I took my Diabetes for granted. I barely tested my blood sugars, and ate what I wanted. Thanks to years of neglect, my retina in my left eye detached when I was 25. I had surgery to fix it, but it was a wake up call for me! I always need someone to talk to about this, but nobody near that truly understands. Hopefully I can help and learn from others!

Hi Johnny. Welcome, and nice to meet you. I do not know where Waterloo is, but I live in Minneapolis. If you ever get to this part of the state, we could have a meetup.
I had a detached retina about 10 years ago. It was fully detached and quite serious. To recover i had to lay face down, not moving for 7 days - seems like a bad dream. I lost quite a bit of peripheral vision so have chosen not to drive. My central vision, in that eye, with corrective lenses is 20/30 so I'm not complaining. I can read, blog, and save to my friends across the street. Life is good, in spite of it all.

I have my ups and downs blood sugar wise (and mentaly) but I eat less, that helps me a lot, I try and portion my food. I'm always dieting so that helps, and I exercise 5 times a week. I try and stay active, because those days Im just in the house doing nothing, I notice and increase in my BS.When I was pregnant, my a1c was always 5.2. ugh I can't get it back there. now my a1c is 7.4 sometimes 7. when I was on lantus and novolog it was in the 6. due to low blood sugars a lot. Im trying really hard now but.. its not easy as you know. yesterday I stayed in 120 and under even after eating. I loved it, I did use my dexcom have it on now, woke up this morning at 211 go figure?

Yes everytime I go in for the dye test, forget the name of it and he shows me the bac of my eye, I cry to be honest. brings back memories I was only 18 at the time it happened. 17-19 I had a lot going on with complictions from Diabetes. I was in the hospital for a month due to a toe ulcer, they had to clean the bone (now I have half of ligament sp? on my pinkie toe, looks funny lol) they had to let it heal from inside out no stitches, I had a lot of whirl pool while in hospital. then i was a assistant manager at a store, went to bend down to open the dooor to open and all I saw was blood when I got back up. I didn't take care of myself teenage years as you said. blah. now I use the pump, and LOVE IT. I'm trying really hard to lower my a1c from 7.4. are you on the pump? do you have the dexcom? I just got it and started to use it but its a pain in the rear! it makes me more crazy with my blood sugars when I use it. but it did help with a low blood sugar in the middle of night, woke me up. sorry about my spelling and all. i'm use to texting. lol yes keep in touch! :)
