Hey folks, I'm pretty sure this topic has been covered to death but what can I say, I love to hear myself talk.  Anyway, I'm considering switching from twice daily NPH injections to Lantus.  I tried…Continue

Jeff replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"Actually I would be interested in exploring pork insulin, I used to take it way back when. It would have been not long after diagnosis, I don't really remember much from that time but I think my numbers were chaotic and my doctor concluded that…"

"A definite improvement over NPH! Levemir is a big improvement over Lantus. Both take about 2 hours to start working."

kiva replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"The insulin itself is actually in an acidic solution (that explains the "burn" a lot of people experience after an injection). In the presence of this acid the insulin is in solution meaning the insulin is in a free state equally…"

Gerri replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"Lantus doesn't release as needed. Would be great if any injected insulin worked this way & the theory behind smart insulin. Lantus causes lows for many because it also doesn't work at a level/stable rate, which is the role of basal."

Jeff replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"Thanks Kiva! I find it's very helpful to know how these things are supposed to work in theory even if that doesn't materialize. Sounds like Lantus is more of a true basal insulin, so however much is required to keep the liver in check…"

Anthony Holko replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"2 X 10 = 20 X 80% = 16 no? Most people find the are better off with the DD of lantus split in 2 so it is hard to see what you will gain except pay more. I take two 25 shots of 25 at 6 am and 6 pm. I would have to take my NPH of 8 shots every 4 hours…"

kiva replied to Jeff's discussion 'Lantus Dosing Wisdom'
"So it seems, if you look at the action graph of Lantus, a 24 hour straight line, that is based on the notion that some of it will release sooner, and the rest later. I'm wondering if you were to take a single unit of Lantus, what would that…"
