Our shopping comparison for a pump and the pros and cons about the Animas we've experienced

Posted on October 22, 2008 at 7:00pm 10 Comments

Don't get me wrong, I am sure that the other pumps are great also, but this is my experience with comparing 4 models of pumps and I do believe that acquiring a pump is a personal choice and depends on the wants and needs of a person and I do acknowledge and respect that... Here goes...

When I was shopping for the pumps, I used this web page… Continue

Son, what would you tell a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic?

Posted on October 10, 2008 at 12:00pm 2 Comments

son: "Go on the pump!"

me: "Okay, but besides that, do you have any advice?"

son: "Yes, you put the emla cream on, you put a IV 3000 on top, you wait for an hour, take off the cream, take 3 alcohol swabs to clean, you wipe with an IV Prep, let it dry, sometimes SkinTac, let it dry and then put the infusion set, sometimes it hurts a little bit and then you have to fill the cannula. That's it."

It really is simple!

Okay, now are you convinced he likes… Continue

Mommy, my tummy hurts

Posted on October 9, 2008 at 7:02pm 6 Comments

Since December 2007, my son has been complaining of stomach aches before/during/after a meal or even during the nighttime. It is almost a daily thing (that he talks about it).

If that happens when he's eating, sometimes he does not want to eat anymore, that complicates the insulin/carbs, but that is another story.

Sometimes, at night, it hurts like he wants to throw up (but he doesn't). But his bg is ok.

I went to the hospital, waited several hours for the… Continue

Sad

Early Summer 2008, I saw on a friend's Facebook status profile something like "you were taken too soon Adamn" and I did not want to believe it. No, it could not be. I met an Adamn (17 years old) 2-3 times at that friend's house and he has type 1 diabetes too. Even told my son that he had a similar pen for his shots.

Maybe they knew of another teen or boy that had the same name. I really did not want it to be him. Researched his full name on the web and found a group that was created… Continue

Quick bio

Posted on October 8, 2008 at 7:26pm 1 Comment

Hi, this is my story.

In 2004, pregnant with my second child, I brought my son who was 3 then, to see his pediatrician. He just changed from an at-home daycare to a big daycare facility, was dragging a cold for about 3-4 weeks. After a quick check-up, as she started to prescribe an antibiotic for the throat I asked so innocently “so is that why he keeps on drinking and going to the bathroom a lot”, she immediately (thank god!) thought about diabetes and checked his urine sugars… Continue

Hi Gina!

Thanks we are doing well though keeping quite busy!!

Life began to feel a bit more manageable around 4 months after the birth :-) Now we are finding our routine. I am really enjoying being able to be home full time with our son (except teaching one day per week).

He has just recently learned to laugh, which fills the room with joy. He is really quite a good baby. We don't have much fussing (without reason) and he loves playing independently and with me. So I can't complain! I'll post another picture soon.

I look forward to news from you about possible new developments :-)

Hi Gina! A delayed reaction from a busy Mommy! We are doing well, but still trying to find our routine. He is growing and changing so quickly!! I started teaching again (one day per week) a few weeks ago. It feels good to be with adults once a week, but I am struggling to find time for lesson planning and grading assignments (for 50 students!!). I am hoping that our dear little one will start taking longer naps. He is a catnapper, but a good sleeper at night. So I mostly work during the night, which grows tiring over time.

How are you doing? How is the new school year going?

Hi Gina!! Our baby boy was born on the exact day that you left me a message :) I put a picture up on my profile :) He was 9 lb 5 oz, 21.5 inches long. A big boy! I had a c-section, but all in all the experience was good. Now he is breastfeeding like a champ and sleeping most of the day. So I am able to rest and recover. I need to sit a lot, which is why I do have some time with my laptop :)

Hope that you are well!

Hi Gina, Thank you so much for remembering our "conversation". My son actually had an upper GI which had normal results. Personally, I think his stomach aches had alot to do with school - not liking it, stressed etc.. He is now in high school and is quite happy. He has not missed any school this year due to stomach issues ! The one physician thought it could be from a sluggish digestive system which is common with diabetics. I know it actually has a formal name but don't think I can try to spell it properly (Para.....) Another suggested he take an antacid. Not sure really what it was all about - it was always so vague but he always looked so terrible when he had the stomach issues as well. We seem to be over them for right now - I wish the same for you. It is so complicated and hard to figure these things out !!! Good luck to you, Nancy

we actually did find a good solution. It is the liquid bandaid. Hannah puts it on around the edges before she swims and it works like a charm.

Hi Gina! I just wanted to check in and see how you are doing, since we haven't talked in a while!

Things are good here. Summer is the calmest time of year from me-- i get to work from home on my own research, which means flexible hours, though a lot to do. Trying to stay motivated :)

My blood sugars have been a lot better recently... too.

Anyway hope the summer is off to a good start for you!

Hi, Gina,
Glad to hear you're having further testing this week. Hope they find whatever is troubling him, 1&1/2 year IS a VERY long time for a young one with tummy trouble. Elisabeth is off the antibiotics, but has to continue taking pentasa for inflammation in her stomach. She sees the GI Dr. in a few months for a follow-up and I'm hoping she can eventually go off the meds, although he says she may have an underlying condition that will require meds for the rest of her life. I am hoping not! I never realized how delicate our health can be and what a miracle it is when everything all works together!

Take care and take courage...
Jessica
