I use quick sets. I change the resevor and infusion set, generally, at the same time. I, usually can go about 3 31/2 days.. I get less absorption after that time, into 4 days. I really do not think the insulin in the resevoir degrades, but my site...

I don't change at the same time, but I probably waste more batteries that way, from having to rewind the pump to add insulin, and rewind the pump to put on new tubing and cannula. It is interesting what your educator said about the particles of pl...

Our shopping comparison for a pump and the pros and cons about the Animas we've experienced

Don't get me wrong, I am sure that the other pumps are great also, but this is my experience with comparing 4 models of pumps and I do believe that acquiring a pump is a personal choice and depends on the wants and needs of a person and I do acknowledge and respect that... Here goes...

When I was shopping for the pumps, I used this web page http://www.diabetesnet.com/diabetes_technology/insulin_pumpContinue

Son, what would you tell a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic?

son: "Go on the pump!"

me: "Okay, but besides that, do you have any advice?"

son: "Yes, you put the emla cream on, you put a IV 3000 on top, you wait for an hour, take off the cream, take 3 alcohol swabs to clean, you wipe with an IV Prep, let it dry, sometimes SkinTac, let it dry and then put the infusion set, sometimes it hurts a little bit and then you have to fill the cannula. That's it."

It really is simple!

Okay, now are you convinced he likes the pump? I would have thought he would ha… Continue

Mommy, my tummy hurts

Since December 2007, my son has been complaining of stomach aches before/during/after a meal or even during the nighttime. It is almost a daily thing (that he talks about it).

If that happens when he's eating, sometimes he does not want to eat anymore, that complicates the insulin/carbs, but that is another story.

Sometimes, at night, it hurts like he wants to throw up (but he doesn't). But his bg is ok.

I went to the hospital, waited several hours for the doctors to tell me that he has "bloa… Continue

Sad

Early Summer 2008, I saw on a friend's Facebook status profile something like "you were taken too soon Adamn" and I did not want to believe it. No, it could not be. I met an Adamn (17 years old) 2-3 times at that friend's house and he has type 1 diabetes too. Even told my son that he had a similar pen for his shots.

Maybe they knew of another teen or boy that had the same name. I really did not want it to be him. Researched his full name on the web and found a group that was created in his name… Continue

Quick bio

Hi, this is my story.

In 2004, pregnant with my second child, I brought my son who was 3 then, to see his pediatrician. He just changed from an at-home daycare to a big daycare facility, was dragging a cold for about 3-4 weeks. After a quick check-up, as she started to prescribe an antibiotic for the throat I asked so innocently “so is that why he keeps on drinking and going to the bathroom a lot”, she immediately (thank god!) thought about diabetes and checked his urine sugars levels and they… Continue

we actually did find a good solution. It is the liquid bandaid. Hannah puts it on around the edges before she swims and it works like a charm.

Hi Gina! I just wanted to check in and see how you are doing, since we haven't talked in a while!

Things are good here. Summer is the calmest time of year from me-- i get to work from home on my own research, which means flexible hours, though a lot to do. Trying to stay motivated :)

My blood sugars have been a lot better recently... too.

Anyway hope the summer is off to a good start for you!

Hi, Gina,
Glad to hear you're having further testing this week. Hope they find whatever is troubling him, 1&1/2 year IS a VERY long time for a young one with tummy trouble. Elisabeth is off the antibiotics, but has to continue taking pentasa for inflammation in her stomach. She sees the GI Dr. in a few months for a follow-up and I'm hoping she can eventually go off the meds, although he says she may have an underlying condition that will require meds for the rest of her life. I am hoping not! I never realized how delicate our health can be and what a miracle it is when everything all works together!

Take care and take courage...

Hi,
Great news! that dosn't have Celiac.... Im glad that has been checked... I hope its just something small. Madelines tummy seem better with her control improvments.
Madeline has her PUMP! I love not having to give the shots! No more NO Mum’ie! Madeline loves the pump too.
Madeline’s BGL are much better with the new pump but we are having too many hypos at night. They have been trying hard to fix them but I guess it all takes time.
I need to set my alarm twice in a night 2am and 4am, as it seems if there's no low at 2am it might happen a 4am. Its makes me feel like a new mum with a baby again all these sleepless nights. I hope this get easyier.
Madeline never really had a honeymooning time, we seem to have fallen straight into it which seems to have made thing harder for us.
Madeline has started to do her own BGL a big step for 3yr old. Now she wants to do them all the time, I don’t mind at least I now what levels she is at.
How are you going now?
Any way I'll check in again soon.

I have to say - that is one thing I like about DH's Omni Pod - there are no extra supplies to buy or shop around for! It all comes in one package, you open, put it on, and voila - you are done (not that there still cannot be some challenges!!) We have 4 infusion sets sitting on our dining room table and I am hoping to try one or two of them myself - but I must admit I am a bit chicken - and really do not like the thought of putting the needles in me!! LOL - I know what a lame excuse for a mommy! :)

ANyhow - we will keep looking - I might start a thread in the pumping group to see what others are saying about infus. sets and what to try . . .

Thanks for all the input!

Hi Gina:

Happy New Year to you and your family. I am glad to hear that your year has started out so well. I must admit our first month of this year has been going great as well even though it has been very busy!

My daughter loves her pump now and said she never wants needles again. I am so glad we convinced her to try one out. Her blood sugar levels are so much better, the real results will show when we recheck her A1C in February. We have had really good results with her infusion sets as well, no problems in the last two months, yeah!!! The insulin pump has added a new found freedom for her and she is already programming it with guidance from us, children seem to pick up these new high tech gadgets faster than we do! I think having a big brother with a pump also makes her want to learn to use it herself even more. Big brother keeps telling her he likes the new 2020 pump better than the older model he has (IR1200) and that he thinks they should trade models. Anyway keep in touch and I will try to chat with your abit more than I have lately, but it just seems that there is never enough hours in my day.

Take Care, Anita
