Leaky Gut Syndrome

I have recently learned of leaky gut syndrome. Some seem to think it is a factor in nearly all, if not all, autoimmune disease. My understanding is that it is caused by diet. I have Type 1 diabetes…Continue

"Agree, Dr B's sentiments about pumping are off the mark, IMO. Change your infusion sites every 3 days and scarring will not be an issue. A pump should make maintaining a level basal much easier and allows square boluses to cover…"

"There are pros and cons and I agree that dr. B arguments against the pump are a bit weak and out of date. I have been "successful" using the pump and dr b food plan, etc. I use a normal bolus for carbs and then square bolus for pro. I also…"

"Full disclosure: I don't pump and have my own personal reasons. And, I am a Dr. B. semi-fanatic. All of that being said, no one ever bats 1.000, not even him. No rule is right for everyone, and I think his pump arguments are a wee bit too…"

Who pumps and is low carb?

I am seriously considering the pump. I am on levimir and it doesn't last. I inject in the morning when I wake up and in the evening before bed. I tried to split it into three doses. I tried splitting the nighttime dose by giving myself half at about 10 pm and the other half at about 2 am. That worked better but it still wasn't perfect. And, I was sleeping through my alarm on occasion and waking up too high. Then I tried splitting it into 3 doses by injecting about 7 am, 3 pm and 11 pm. I kept…See More

"Has your son split his lantus dose? If not, that could be explaining the afternoon highs. Lantus DOES NOT last 24 hours, although I'm sure the folks at Joslin are telling you it does. He should take half his dose at bedtime and half his dose in…"

"The rubber stopper moves. Thinking back, once it was hard to suck the insulin out and I had to give the rubber stopper a push. It was just stuck. Other than that one time, it has not been a problem."

"I suck my Humalog out of insulin pen refill cartridges. I do not inject air- I just suck. I've been doing this for 5 or 6 years and have never had a problem. If I get too much, I just shoot the extra out into the air. I like it because the…"

GlacierLily replied to Otter's discussion 'Bernstein's blood sugar targets' in the group Dr. Bernstein Diabetes Solution Group
"No, it is not possible and Dr. B would not claim it is. But depending on how extremely anal you want to be, it is possible to stay relatively close, say less than about 100 most of the time. I am type 1 and I do not achieve that, but I try."

"Bernstein will eyeball 1/4 unit! He would correct 110 with 1/4 unit. He uses syringes with 1/2 unit markings. It is easy to line up with the 1/2 unit mark because the lines are MUCH thinner than the standard syringes."

Welcome to the family! On this forum you will learn so much. Most of all you will learn that you are not alone. Everyone here is supportive and will provide answers to your questions. Search the site for answers. Read the discussions and blogs for information. There are videos to help you understand diabetes and its treatment. Most of all there is family to talk to and even to vent to, if needed. Welcome home.
