The Stigma of Being a Type 2

Kelly: Certainly, remission is not guaranteed for roux-n-y gastric bypass, but there is a lot of data from Europe and recently from US that shows about 80-89% success - I'd say that is pretty good,...

The Stigma of Being a Type 2

I know you're not replying to me, but excuse me for butting in on this, as your reply is perfect for my point. I know lots of health zealots who think, at age 50, if you become a vegan or stop smok...

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding out there. If you are over 65 AND have diabetes, then you ARE high risk and you can now get your shot in Canada. My daughter is a supervising screener in a local H1N1 clinic, and they are finding that eve...

To answer your questions: 1. When I was first diagnosed, I visited their website and read up about the disease. They scared the shit out of me with this statement: "In fact, up to 80% of people with diabetes will die as a result of a heart attack...

Not heard of that effect or suffered it yet. Most "sugar free chocolate" isn't very good. What we sometimes (infrequently) do is buy Lindt 70% dark chocolate but eat only one square at a time. It's so intense with choc flavour, it usually satisfie...

This will make me popular (not) in some vested interest groups: 1.What has the Cdn Diabetes Assoc. done for you as a t2d lately? 2.Should CDA represent both t1d and t2d interests? Are t1d and t2d interests similar enough? 3.What are the big t2d ...

Fat to Fatter to T2D

Hi t2ds, how are you tonight? Let's talk about exercise a bit - a topic I hate. Yeah, I hate exercise, always have, even when I was skinny (160 lbs on 5'8")- that was 1970-1972 - I'm not kidding. I played various team sports - volleyball, hardball (pitcher), softball, football (Pop Warner), curling, bowling, etc. I had paper routes as a kid, rode my bike all over Winnipeg, walked and ran in the Miles for Millions - an all day marathon. I enjoyed those sports and games, and performed well enough… Continue

Hello fellow t2ders!

As a brand new member of this group, I thought I would offer a little background on my diabetic perspective. I fancy myself as a t2d activist of sorts, though I haven't transmitted any of my rants thru the conventional channels so far - that is, to my elected representatives, diabetes association (mine being the Cdn Diabetes Assoc.) or even other websites. I have a blog with many entries, some quite angry and raw, showing frustration common to many no doubt. I use bad words in my blogs, so be fo… Continue

Hi Grant, as a T1 I hold the opinion that diabetes is diabetes. Not all treatments for T1s are the same and the same is true for T1.5s and T2s. There should be no stigma on any diabetic nor should anyone take lightly what another D is enduring. We're all on this journey together, so why not support eachothers well-being, rights and feelings. Take good care and stay well. Virgil in Portland, OR

I agree that type 1 and type 2 (and other more rare types) are very different diseases. But because we share the need to control blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and blood lipids to prevent, minimize, and delay complications, all people living with diabetes share some common ground.

I like that melting pot, and the various viewpoints. And the fact those of us who visit here often are motivated to help each other. Welcome!
