The Dead Man's Switch

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 9:31pm 5 Comments

My Medtronic pump has the auto-shutoff feature - also called the "dead man's switch" by some - and at least twice a month this has gone off. It's usually a weekend morning, and I awaken to hear the pump vibrating and screeching to alert me that I haven't bolused or touched any buttons for 12 hours. What a silly feature. If I was hypoglycemic and passed out for 12 hours, just go ahead and stick a fork in me. I'm done.

Of course I am annoyed by this alarm initially, but after quieting…

My JDRF Death Valley Ride Report and Thank You Letter

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 10:36pm 2 Comments

I rode 100 miles in the heat of the desert on October 20, completing the full 100-mile Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Ride in Death Valley, California.

I did this ride for many reasons. I love cycling in new places, and taking on a challenge. I hoped to meet up with others with T1 diabetes, and I was able to do that. I rode most of the day with Ross (from Alabama, father of 7-year daughter Mallory who had T1) and Jeff (a T1 from Massachusetts.) Most of the 330 riders in…

Busy at work?

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 6:27pm 4 Comments

I know I'm busy at work when I pull out my meter and test, then forget to look back at the results. Ten or 20 minutes later, I look back and see the strip sitting in the meter, which has shut down.
Wow - the meter takes 5 whole seconds to give me a result, and I am so harried at work that I can't wait for that?!
Time for me to slow it down a little.

Oregon Tour de Cure ride report

Posted on November 12, 2011 at 12:55pm 3 Comments

A few months late, but here it is - the report I sent out to those who donated to my Tour de Cure ride in Oregon, so pardon the remedial explanation of hypoglycemia:

I booked an Amtrak ticket from Seattle to Portland on Friday, July 29, and paid the extra $10 to put my bike on the baggage car for the 200-mile trip. Seattle’s King Street Station is about 8 miles from my house, so I decided that if I could carry everything I needed for the weekend I could ride there and have a car-less…

UPDATE: I Have to Know - Got the Kids Screened

Posted on November 16, 2010 at 1:30pm 2 Comments

12/8/10: Just received word that both kids tested negative for the insulin antibodies! This is such good news and I am so happy, it makes me realize how different results would have really darkened my holiday spirit and possibly led to years of anxiety and guilt. I'm going to celebrate. The kids may not quite understand why, but they will!

I took my 8-yo daughter and 5-yo son in to a local research hospital for a blood draw as part of the TrialNet study. I…
