Four years ago, during my first year teaching, students asked me if I was going to donate blood. I responded "no" because 1) I am a type 1 diabetic and 2) I had some tattoo work done within the same year. I stopped by the donation station and I wa...

I've been told I can give blood (in the U.S.), but I did recently find out that as a pregnant type 1 diabetic, I cannot donate my baby's cord blood to the public cord banks - even for research.

I had been giving blood regularly before being diagnosed with Type 1 almost two years ago - I would like to start donating again, and the local red cross is all for it. Any advice for preparations I might take, or adverse effects to expect for a t...

I give blood on a regular basis. I won't be able to for a bit because of recently having surgery. I told them that I have type 1 and Red Cross says it's not a big deal.

here's a stab in the ass: if you were a diabetic in the 70's and took beef/pork derived insulin - the red cross won't take your blood because of possible exposure to CJD (mad cow) ain't that a scream?

I have given blood twice successfully with Carter in the US. I have tiny veins though so other times they were unable to stick me. Haven't tried anytime recently though. I inquired about becoming a donor for bone marrow, and was told no specifical...

In Canada, a person with type 1 or any diabetic on insulin is not permitted to give blood. I've heard different reasons at different times from different people: 1) You took beef-pork insulin in the 70s and 80s, therefore you might have mad cow d...

I'd given blood 24 times before beingdiagnosed. I called the Canadian Blood Services and was told it depends on what meds you're using if you're Type 2 (Metformin is ok). Type 1s are not allowed to donate in Canada because they say a drop in blood...

About me

Hello,

I'm not going to start by writing about my diabetes.

Firstly, things that are important to me. My Girlfriend Gem, we have been going out since 2001, why she puts up with me, I don't really know, we have a cat called Scampy, and we all live in the countryside just outside of Stratford upon Avon.

I'm a bit of a petrolhead, enjoying motorcycles as well as cars, I've been an automotive engineer since leaving university, working on several cars from Aston Martins to Land Rovers, currently working with Jaguar.

I'm a movie nut too, enjoying the cinema, and my ever increasing DVD/Blu-Ray collection that is getting a little out of control.

I grew up in north Wales, not to far from mount Snowdon, on a small farm.

Now the boring bit, I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2002, I went un-diagnosed for a bit too long, so ended up having a few problems when my sugar levels returned to normal, I had acute neuropathy for about six months, rather painful at the time, but gone now. So I multi inject, but I do wonder if a pump might be better for me, because I spend most of the day sat in front of a PC.

My father has diabetes, and so does his dog, looks like it runs in the family!

I'll happily chat away to anyone that feels they would like to contact me, does not have to be diabetes related, anything really!

Anyway, that's me.

So Hefin - you have the diesel version of the Smart? Here in North America they don't sell them anymore - monopoly by the gas companies - sigh. Diesels are so much cleaner for the environment - and get much better mileage compared to gas powered. I get alot of comments on my Smart - but sadly tell people - that if it's not a diesel engine - then it's not worth the extra $$$'s to buy one. Maybe North America will change their ways one day.
