Helen Howes replied to cdredbaron10's discussion 'Reversing neuropathy in type 2 diabetics'
"Are you taking Metformin? If so, are you taking B12? The lack of B12 (which is caused by long-term use of Metformin) can cause neuropathies too, and these are not fixed by lowering your blood sugars. It is reputed to be a long haul, but lowering…"

"Diet alone?"
Helen Howes replied to nc929's discussion 'Do you notice any difference after eating beans?'
"Compared to what? I think that beans are pretty high carb.. GI is not ver y helpful for diabetics.. Test before eating, after 30 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, and work it out for your own metabolism. I haven't eaten too many beans lately.. HH"
Helen Howes replied to julez_79's discussion 'Diabetic Neuropathy after only 2 years and despite good control?'
"Are you taking Metformin? If so, are you taking B12? A shortage of B12 (which is a side-effect of Metformin) can cause neuropathic symptoms which are hard to fix.. Some other drugs also remove or block B12 (PPIs and steroids, particularly) HH"

Helen Howes replied to LadyNononoke's discussion 'From Insulin to Pill'
"What you need is insulin.. You don't have a Metformin shortage, and you are obviously managing OK.. What's the benefit? HH"

Helen Howes replied to tenderhearted_17's discussion 'sleep aids...yay or nay?'
"I take a magnesium supplement which definitely helps and will not mess up your sugars.. Just the regular over-the-counter stuff, with zinc.. HH"

Helen Howes replied to sangzter's discussion 'Glicazide+metformin caused weight gain?'
"Gliclazide is a beta-pusher, (makes the remains of your poor strung-out pancreas work itself to death) and it will increase your weight.. You have to "eat to your drug" or you get lows. Metformin and low-carb is the way to go IMO. HH"

Helen Howes replied to amitc's discussion 'Need to gain Weight'
"It's much more important that you control your blood sugars than that you worry about your weight. Are you on insulin? With a FBS of 180+ you might want to be on a basal insulin (long-acting) What are your post-meal numbers like? What are you…"

Helen Howes replied to becky's discussion 'A1c1 levels'
"Your doctor is not helping, nor is that diet recommendation. Sack them both, please, and get your self-respect back.. You're doing your best with very poor assistance. Eat, test, anything that spikes you has to go or be eaten in smaller…"

Helen Howes replied to Emily's discussion 'For those on insulin -- Dietary Fiber - subtract from bolus or not?'
"You need to look at the Book again.. Fibre counts too, and you need not to stuff yourself in any case, as this distends the gut and causes blood sugar rises. It's not easy, but it's Really Worth While.. HH"

Helen Howes replied to Leilani71's discussion 'My Daughter's Blood Sugars Run High'
"When you say "eats healthily" can you describe her diet?"

Helen Howes replied to Emily Coles's discussion 'Study of the effects of personality and diabetes distress on glycemic control'
"Will there be a box for "distress caused by health professionals who describe all diabetics as stupid/unmotivated/unhelpful? And shout? Happened to me today and I'm cross.."

Helen Howes replied to Leigh Ann's discussion 'Portable low-carb food for a Type 2'
"Weird is a matter of opinion. Other's opinions are not always allowable.. Roll thin slices of cheese and ham together into a sausage and eat that (I do..) This will survive at least 4 hours uncooled and still palatable Cold sausages are nice..…"

Helen Howes replied to guitarnut's discussion 'The Raw Foods Diet'
"I see this as a not-very-subtle form of bullying "Look at me, I eat this and I'm not diabetic!!!" So it must be my fault.. ? Food is like religion and tastes in reading or music, mine is none of your business really.. HH"

Helen Howes replied to photomkr's discussion 'Gastric By-Pass and Type II Diabetes'
"You might read this before you allow them to chop you up.. http://diabetesupdate.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/study-quantifies-whether-weight-loss.html The reason the op works so fast is because you will be on a Low Carb 600-calorie starvation diet…"

Helen Howes replied to Charles Radley's discussion 'Glycemic index food labeling ?'
"Well, speaking as a T2 with a lot of testing under my belt, I found that GI was pretty much (bats***) unhelpful.. The difference between low and high GI foods is largely about normal responses, and the two sorts still spiked me just as high and…"
