Why I'm in grad school

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 7:53pm 1 Comment

After college, I knew I was going to go to grad school but I didn't know when or for what. Fast forward a few years and I ended up being diagnosed w/ T1. That was my first experience with the REAL American health care payment system. Dealing with paperwork and hours of being on hold to inform my insurance company that insulin only lasts 28 days after opening so I need a new bottle every month, etc. Nothing that is unfamiliar to all of us people with diabetes or any other chronic condition. This… Continue

The Economic Burden of Diabetes

Posted on July 13, 2010 at 11:19am 2 Comments

I came across an article about the costs of diabetes in the US today while doing some reasearch. Unfortunatly, the article comes from a policy journal, Health Affairs, so I can't post a link. However, I was surprised at some of the findings. First, the median age of diagnosis for Type 1 was 24. I shouldn't have been so surprised, since I was nearly 23 and there are plenty of adults at diagnosis here on Tu, but I was surprised that there really are a lot of adults diagnosed w/ T1.

They also… Continue

Feeling down because I'm up.

Posted on June 3, 2010 at 1:08pm 2 Comments

I had my latest endo appointment this morning. My weight is up, my A1C is up and my BP is up. I was not a happy camper. Because I have other risk factors besides diabetes for my eyes and the fact that my BP has now been consistantly over 135/80 for my last 3 visits, she decided to put me on lisinopril. I'm feeling a bit mad/sad/upset about this because it makes me feel that everything I do to control my diabetes means nothing if I'm going to start having complications already. I exercise, I… Continue

Pump-friendly dress?

Posted on April 23, 2010 at 6:56am 1 Comment

I was on diabetesmine the other day and there was a reader who recommended this dress http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Dresses/Above-Knee-Dresses/WH202/Womens-Essential-Summer-Dress.html?NavGroupID=4 as great for pumpers. I just ordered it and will let you know if it works. I love dresses, but hate wearing the thing on my thigh or putting the pump in my bra.… Continue

I haven't been to CafeNation, but now I'm definitely going to have to check it out, AND make sure that my pump is proudly displaced when I go. If you're ever back in the area, we will have to get together!

Hi Jackie!
I'm a project specialist at a children's hospital and I have worked on some pretty fantastic teams in the last few years. I have primarily worked on teams with goals to improve care and control for teens with asthma (improving access to visits, connecting them to the community for things like transportation and emergency prescription referrals, and doing creative thinking about innovative ways for teens to participate in their care and self-manage at home). I've also worked on teams to increase the frequency and speed at which teen girls are notified of positive STD results after and ED visit. Most recently I've been involved with work to develop registries and registry based prompts for teens with IBD and doing qualiative interviews to understand what patients want/ need. Whew. That's a lot! Good luck with you MPP - you're doing work in a very important area... as we all know :)
