Well, since Celiac Disease (Gluten Allergy) is such a prevelant disease with diabetes, I figured we needed to have a group for it. Let this be a group for questions and suggestions.

Hey Jan, I saw your post on the Diabetes & Celiac group wall, and idk if anyone has answered them or not, but there are no degrees of celiac disease. You either have it or you don't. Also, you cannot tolerate any amount of gluten - it doesn't really matter how little. The only exception i've found to this is i used to buy cereal that had oats or malt in it and i can eat a bowl and not get symptoms, but if i do it for multiple days in a row, my stomach gets really distended, so i just stopped trying to cheat =\ also, yes, children at very young ages can have this. one of my coworkers daughters had it before she was 2!

Hi Jan. :) So did you have the biopsy to confirm the celiac or did your Dr have blood work drawn? My mother had the biopsy but when my daughter had the symptoms I took her in and all her bloodwork came back positive. One test was supposed to be 99% accurate for celiac so between that, her symptoms, having family history with celiac/T1 D's etc. and her symptoms going away after going going on a GF diet the GI Dr. agreed with me that a biopsy would probably be stress my daughter didn't need to go through. Yes, I do believe there is some correlation between stress and celiac myself. I think I read something about that as well at some point after my daughter got it. I know both my mother and daughter had stressful things going on at the time of their diagnosis as well. What about you? I see you were just diagnosed with D's so I'm sorry to hear you got a double whammy diagnosis(if the celiac was confirmed). Even though my blood work came back negative for celiac I believe I have a sensitivity to gluten myself. I feel better when I eliminate it out of my diet. Anyway, if you need any celiac info. and/or resources I will be happy to send them to you. I'll send you a friend request so I can send you an email here with some information and links if you 'd like.
