My diabetes educator says that overnight BGs are the key to a great A1c because if you're high during the night, you can stay that way for hours before bolusing to correct. Two weeks ago, she suggested that I add a little insulin to my 3 - 5 am b...

Do you have the newest PDM? I have the original PDM and there's no option to turn off the expiration reminder. You can set the reminder for 1 - 18 hours -- but you can't turn it off.

Thanks for sharing this. What a succinct description of what it's like to live with Type 1 -- and expressed in a way that non-diabetics can understand, too.

Cathy, You're talking about insulin in regard to someone who has Type 2. The issues surrounding blood sugar/insulin/etc are a lot different from those for people with Type 1. I'm curious -- and not trying to start a fight :) -- why do you think ...

There's a story on MSNBC.com today about a special kind of tattoo that may be able to monitor blood glucose by acting like a mood ring -- changing colors according to BG levels. Now that's pretty cool news. What bothers me is that the reporter u...

Janet,

Thx for the friend add. Yes, I am a sailor, but didn't grow up as one. Currently we live on a catamaran in the Caribbean (visiting in the US right now).

I have always wanted to try some of the scow sailing on the lakes, but never got out to the Midwest.

Fair Winds,
Mike

Janet,

Thanks for the suggestions. When my tech guy makes the next round of updates, I will have him incorporate some of these. I like the distinction on the types by colors

I see your point. I guess it would depend how often you go low (and just how low you go. I had one bad low back in April and I live alone so I tend to avoid them at all costs, even if it meant going a tad high on occasion. I forgot, though, that you're on a pump. I know pumps have a lot more options and I'm sure you're talking to some of the pumping experts. There are also a lot of knowledgeable people on Diabetesforum.com. One Type 1 named Subby is a pumper and very knowledgeable.

Being LADA can definitely be challenging, especially with little quirks like you seem to be experiencing in the morning. Hang in there and don't beat up on yourself if it isn't perfect. We can only do what we can do!

I just saw your comment to me from a few days ago. I swear I will never figure out this site! Wow, it sounds like you had a long road. I was frustrated as hell after two months of chaotic numbers let alone years! I'm glad you got it figured out. Were you trying to manage on oral meds all that time?
That's interesting about your mornng insulin spurt. I don't see any consistent pattern in mine, and I tend to have a day or two of highs for no reason, more than lows (as if I'm producing less insulin). You said on the thread that it wouldn't work to change your I:C ratio for breakfast. I'm confused why that wouldn't work. Wouldn't it mean you were taking less insulin for the carbs you eat and so wouldn't go low? You say you aren't producing much insulin, what was your c-peptide? I had two done at different labs: one was .38 and one was .70.

Okay Janet - this is going to be a strange question to you - but I had a pen pal who lived in Appleton - way back in the 70's - thru' Jack and Jill magazine - I will scream if you say that you know her ... Kay Thyssen??? I lost contact with her as we grew up (she has a twin sister) - it would be so strange if you knew her. Anyway, stay healthy and hope you are enjoying your summer!

Hi Janet

I see you were diagnosed in 2001. You said it took you three years to get your LADA diagnosis. How did that happen? Did your doctor catch it because your numbers were climbing up on oral meds? For me it was a little over a year after my mis-diagnosis and the oral meds were no longer working. It seemed so soon! I asked to start insulin but I wasn't able to get stable and knew something wasn't right. I read and thought, read and thought and figured out finally that I was LADA. I was living in Guatemala at the time so even the endo hadn't heard of it, but after hearing my reasoning and seeing my labs she agreed I was Type 1, not II. So 8 years in do you know how much insulin you are still making? Did you have a lot of up and downs, having to change your insulin doses due to pancreas surges?
