LaGuitariste replied to Melitta's discussion 'horrible article in Women's Health'

I am a classical guitarist, a software developer, a great-aunt to six lovely children and a big fan of Dr. Bernstein, Jorge Caballero, Vincent Van Gogh and JS Bach. When I was 48, I lived in France for a year on a shoe-string budget while injecting Lantus twice per day and nursing a bad back. I proved that traveling and living overseas with chronic conditions is challenging but, with enough planning and determination, definitely do-able. Diabetes does not define me.

Depressed...

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 7:55am 8 Comments

I've been eating well, maintaining OK but not great BG's, getting very poor-quality, fractured sleep, feeling weepy and stressed out about the evil job search, grieving the death of my friend a few weeks ago, trying to walk some but not getting out very much, not posting much.

Just riding the waves.

Sometimes I get really, really sick and tired of being sick and tired -- and alone -- all the time.

Soooooooooo tired of being jerked around

I don't know why I'm such a gullible git, but Monday (against my better judgement!!!) I let a technical recruiter hoodwink me again.

AGAIN. Sheesh.

He said that he had a hot job for a big technology firm. The job description was a perfect match for my resume. I needed to be "ready to go" Tuesday morning. They'd bring me in for an interview on-site around nine a.m. and that if everything went as planned, I'd start training in the afternoon as the person doing the training was…

Great-Auntie's Book Club: "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" - Week 01

OK, for the first week of my virtual book club we supposedly read the first sections of the latest edition (2011) of "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" by Richard K. Bernstein, M.D. -- through page 54.

I have always enjoyed hearing his amazing success story (page xiii) and this time was just as touching and inspirational as my previous readings. That he has not just survived T1 since 1946, but has also both thrived and helped so many other diabetics is quite…

You know you're a diabetic classical guitarist when...

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 8:38pm 2 Comments

You know you're a diabetic classical guitarist when:

1) The first thing all your guitar buddies do when you tell them you're diabetic is worry about how you test -- because your finger tips are far too precious to poke. They all breathe a huge sigh of relief when you reassure them that you can test on the sides of your fingers;

2) You have to super-size all your sheet music because when your blood glucose is shifting around, those little black dots start to swim into one…

Yes, I've definitely heard of Mildred Dilling. So great you were able to learn from her! I came late to the harp, after having played piano most of my life. I started about 7 years ago. I don't play the pedal harp, but have a definite addiction to harps of all shapes and sizes.
