Hello :) Well first of all, don't panic. I have a very big family and only two os us have got type 1 diabetes, so there isn't a very big chance of you getting it. But it's always helpful to look out for symptoms whether for you or for other family...

OOPPS! Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. The cause is unknown but Scientists think it is in the genetics, triggered by something in the environment or by viruses, etc. They don't know. ;-)

Hello Jeriel: :)

How are you doing?

There is a lot more to both types of Diabetes but here are a few basics:

Many years ago Type 1 only occurred to young People about 20 years and younger. Now it can be dxd. in People of any age. Type 1’s produce too little or no Insulin. Type 1’s need manufactured Insulin immediately, to bring their sugars down or the body will “consume” its own tissue(fat) for energy. Without Insulin they will die in a short time. Type 1’s are usually slim but not always.

Type 2 Diabetes used to only happen to People after about age 30. Now the youngest Type 2 is age 2. Diabetes has morphed. With Type 2’s, diabetes usually occurs gradually through the years. Most people(but not all) with the disease are overweight at the time of diagnosis. Type 2’s can have Diabetes for years and not know it, since they may have very slight symptoms that they don’t associate with Diabetes. Most Type 2’s can live for many years just by low carb diet and exercise and perhaps years later, then need oral meds. Others need oral meds. soon after being dxd. and even Insulin. Type 2’s produce Insulin but will become resistant to their own Insulin, so it is of little or no value to them. They then need manufactured Insulin also.

Good question. :)
