I had to take a trip to the ER in an ambulance in October. I was in a low, on top of a high fever....I just remember being really frustrated because they wouldn't let me test it, and they couldn't get enough blood because they were too afraid the ...

Jody, I'm new here and following blogs and posts to learn about people. How is your foot and how are you doing? Did you ever get in to see the ID specialist?

This goes back many, many years, but when I was growing up in Richland there was a story in the local paper about how a McDonalds was going to open up in Othello but for some reason did not. Townspeople were angry, and several were photographed picketing the site. Now, I would like to live in a town where something trivial is the biggest area of local concern, but then again, you're angry that you didn't get a fast food chain restaurant?!? That was a civic improvement!?
That was back in 1985 or something; I'm sure Othello has at least 5 or 6 greasy joints to choose from now and the citizenry are fat & happy as a result. But for some reason that news story and photograph stuck in my mind. The word "hell" isn't in the name by accident.

Wow, I have been to Othello, and you'll miss a lot more than rain there. Mind you, I grew up in the Dri-Sh**ies nearby, which are not much better.
I hope you are having luck managing your bg during the holiday break - yes, I think it is sometimes luck.

So are you all settled in to your new community? I have some friends that live there, the Bowser's (you never know, it's a small world). I start tomorrow with kids, but have been back this past week coaching vball and getting ready. In fact, I'm heading in now...isn't that what Labor Day is for?

Rough month

Last month,. The day before my birthday, I woke up with what I thought was the stomach flu. My coteacher, who I spend a lot of time in and out of school sick with had missed school a few days before. I spent much of my birthday weekend, coughing, getting sick, and having a fever. By monday, the fever was gone, but the blister on my foot was making my foot swell.
I never connected the two. By around 8:25, during my prep time, I walked into the office and demanded a sub. The nurse took my temp and… Continue

Frustrated

I had my last doctor's appointment before my move to Eastern Washington on Tuesday. I left there frustrated. The more I think about it, the more frustrated I become. He really didn't listen to me. He's not a diabetic doctor, as when I was diagnosed I didn't have insurance, and once I got insurance, preexisting conditions, "Blah, blah, blah"...we all know the story.

But my frustration lies within this. When we talked about my numbers I mentioned that I tend to go low, and lately have only been n… Continue

Enough Carbs to get me through the day!

I'm terrible!

During the last 6+ months I've learned a lot about the carb content of food. Somedays I eat a few more carbs than I should. Other days, I eat a lot less. I usually try to make "good choices", when it comes to selecting my "carb choices". Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm human, but I don't see myself sitting down to a HUGE milkshake.

I'm terrible because I memorize numbers well. If I've looked at a food's carb content I usually end up knowing it offhand, the next time I have that food.… Continue

Potlucks, parties, food

As a teacher there always seems some sort of "gathering" or potluck in the teacher's lounge.
At the school where I had my long term position last year, and where I substitute most frequently now there are always frequent lunchtime gatherings. The teachers and staff stop me in the hall to make sure I'll be in the lounge and let me know I'm welcome to any of the "spread."

Last year, I LOVED taking part in this. I even brought things on my "assigned" days. As a subsitute, I usually do not hear abo… Continue

Sense of Humor

I hope my sense of humor doesn't offend non-diabetic friends, family, and coworkers. For me, that is how I operate in live. If I can't make a joke out of something, then it's not worth looking at. My goal for my blog is to write about the "humorous" things that happen to me, as a diabetic.

Since I was diagnosed in October I've been lucky. I've only had a few high blood sugars. I think I may watch it too closely. There are times where I think I watch the Carbs too much and I get too low.

In the… Continue
