They are in a joint venture to create a closed loop system using a Insulin pump and CGM.called "The JDRF Artificial Pancreas Project". They have assembled quite a talented group including, Dr. Lois Jovanovic M.D ,FACE http://www.sansum.org/scientific_physic.php, Dale E Seaborg Ph.D. Chemical Engineer, Dr. Eyal Dassau, Ph.D.resaearch Engineer, and others. I believe the spokesper… Continue

Hey Joe, good to meet you. I **thought** I was doing low-carb since about Jan-February 2008. And I suppose I was. My numbers got better, my insulin use was down, which is a HUGE benefit that is not widely appreciated.

Just last month, a bunch of people I know through work -- which is intense fitness training -- were all doing a 30-day "Paleo" diet challenge. I actually started the challenge very late, on August 18th. I cut out milk, which I used to consume A LOT of, and I cut out legumes. But for the last several months I'd been a little complacent and had started eating ice cream, occasional toast, occasional cereal, and dropping chocolate chips in peanut butter and eating by the spoonful!

I suffered pretty badly the first 1-2 weeks. It's gotten better, but I still suffer from craving carbs. I know this is made a lot worse in my case from depression -- I think my brain craves the sugar as a serotonin placebo.

My wife helps me a lot and we work hard to find interesting recipes. She tries to make cookies and cakes and waffles using nut powder, which appeal to her but I don't really care that much for them. I eat a lot of meat. The only supplement I ever take is fish oil, which I believe is extremely helpful.

Anyway, my results are absolutely amazing. My blood sugars are down, but most importantly, my standard deviation is way down, and my insulin usage is way down --- all the way to an average of 29.6 units per day. If you'd like I can share a link which shows my online BG log. It shows my BG every time I check it, and then it shows the averages, standard deviations, and total amount of insulin I use each day. Let me know.

How long have you been trying to shift to low carb? What motivated you to try it?

Hey Joe, thank you for the comment on my blog and tattoo. I like old Hawaii stuff (Tiki etc) a lot. It sounds like your Rattan furniture would be right up my alley.

Hope you are having a great weekend.

hi Joe. I hope you're well. I read your low carb diet. I try to follow Dr Bernstein'low carbs and now I ate 40 or 45 g of carbs by day but not easy. Did you take a basal insulin? thank you. Have a nice day.

Thank you for you kind thoughts. It's been a really rough week and today was so difficult. We buried her in the garden amidst the flowers where she liked to sit.

Hi Joe - just noticed your comment on Linda's page - about us "old timers". I'm trying to type out something here to you - but those beautiful pics of the seaside are taking my thoughts away from what I want to say to you. Where abouts were those shots taken in California? Anyway, will say au revoir for now - just wanted to pop in and say "bonjour" to someone close to the time I was diagnosed.
