Just moved from Philadelphia to the ACT a few days ago. Does anyone know of a diabetic support group around Canberra? Couldn't seem to find one searching online. Wouldn't mind meeting other "insulin junkies" : ) like myself around here. John

Hi John, I asked my dr about Symlin and the diabetes consultant and they had never heard of it, they said it probably comes from the states. Gutted so I was, I would try it.

I'm impressed by the whole juggling thing in general, but that fact that it was 18,000 worth of insulin pumps is and was pretty darn cool!
I can't juggle to save my life!

Hi John, I know what you mean about alert training being a state secret. I had sent my money to HSP when they cancelled the program from under me. I think that part of the reason it is difficult to find training advice is that so many dogs just seem to pick it up on their own that their owners aren't of much of help when you're trying to do formal training.

I have a partial training manual from someone who used to work for the Australian organization and their method boiled down to keeping the dog with you at all times to create a strong bond and then looking for any signs of a reaction from the dog and then using positive reinforcement.

That's what I'm doing with Tessie right now, but I will probably do some formal scent discrimination work when she's a bit older (she's 6 months). She does have some reaction when my son's BG drops rapidly, but it not even close to being consistent yet. I do know that people use scent from the feet, palms, and saliva for training.

HTH!

Kirsten
