Type-2's will have enough insulin being produced but the insulin receptors on the cells cannot accept the insulin. At the same time insulin is produced, C-Peptides are also produced. Therefore in type-2's you will find plenty of C-Peps but the insulin comes to a closed door and drugs have to be taken to open the doors, (the keys). Type-1's don't produce insulin and C-Peps will therefore be low, indicating type-1 diabetes. See below.

Yes I know today with the pump, life MAY BE A BIT EASIER, but the basics remain the same. There will be people who pay no attention to this. Your bad luck! If you want the truth about diabetes read this .
I post this letter from time to time because it seems to help a lot of newbies and not so newbies to live better with diabetes. Hope you think so also. . I have 48 years of diabetes at 5 needles per day and 10 blood tests daily and have some nice complications.

HOW LIFE WAS FOR THE DIABETIC IN 1960.
I have to smile when I hear people complaining that they now have diabetes. At this time with the bloodglucose monitors life for the diabetic is so immensely improved over the time when I became a type-1 diabetic in 1960.
Let me tell you why!

A bit of un update about Johanna, JohnBen's wife .I called Johanna about 2 weeks ago to have a bit of a chat ( after all we have the same background genes ...from the Netherlands ...and neither of us spoke Dutch during the chat) Johanna has taken a course in grief counselling , which she felt very helpful ;met other people with similar circumstances .Her back is still a concern ; I recall JB writing about that . Her family spread out : in Ontario and BC ; they are regularly in touch with her .She was very clear, that she is not ready to move ut of their home on the Island .Many memories !!I asked her permission , if OK to post in a few words how she is managing .I promised I would call again .

Johnben was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1960, and awarded the Joslin medal several years ago. He passed away from a heart attack on January 6, 2012.

Just wondering -from the time you sent the application in till you received the medal-how long was it? Did a Canada Post trace on the Expresspost letter and it was received on Feb 9,2011. Also, did you have to send a photo or something else to them for whatever reason or reasons. I was planning on having our local paper do a feature on me as I believe that not many people are aware of this recognition and probably deserve it if for no other reason as motivation and inspiration for the other people out there that have to deal with this as well.
