Hello everyone. I'm a 17 year-old high school student, soon to be nursing student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. I've been a type 1 for almost 9 years. I have to say that I have lots of diabetic pride and love taking opportunities to educate people in my life about a disease plagued with misconceptions. I've been going to diabetes camp for eight years and will be a counselor this year. It is what I look forward to each year--the friends, the silly anecdotes about lows, the connection with nature, the campers--to me, it's better than any material things I may superficially covet. It's a lifelong committment to kids with diabetes, and I am thankful I had the privelege of having someone be committed to me at camp. If you're wondering what the name of this awesome camp is, it is Camp Setebaid (diabetes spelled backwards) and it is located in Shickshinny, PA. I highly encourage anyone in the PA/MD/NJ/OH/NY area to go there. It is phenomenal. www.setebaidservices.org (No I am not formally endorsing this camp, I simply advocate for people to reap the benefits of diabetes camp!)
